Abigail’s Character in The Crucible
Abigail’s parents were killed by Native Americans when she was a little girl. Even though her uncle was the reverend of the Church Of Salem all throughout the story Abigail Williams was filled with guilt and sin.
All throughout the story Abby Williams constantly finds ways to stir up trouble in the town of Salem. You could tell she was a troublemaker from the very start of the story. When we first meet Abigail Williams she is dancing in the woods and trying to communicate with the devil. Not only did she dance, but she also drank the blood from the pot to seal the deal. These actions are highly frowned upon by the Church Of Salem, and also the people of Salem. Not only is it frowned upon by the church and the people, but it is also frowned upon by God.
During the Salem witch trials false accusations were nothing new, but Abigail Williams took it to a whole new level. While she was dancing in the woods trying to summon the devil Abigail along with many other girls were caught by her uncle Reverend Paris red handed. When asked about it she refused, and blamed on Tituba the slave. This action resulted in Tituba being whipped and beaten for supposedly performing “witchcraft”. Not only did she accuse Tituba she accused several other innocent people, which caused them to be hanged for no reason.
Not only was Abigail Williams a liar, but also caused John Proctor to cheat on his wife. While she was dancing in the forest at the beginning of the story; Abigail Williams wished for John Proctor to finally be hers, but one thing stood in the way and that was his wife. All throughout The Crucible Abigail Williams shows her attraction to John Proctor. Most of the time Proctor can resist, but in the past he had slipped up and supposedly had an affair with Ms. Williams. It is believed that he did but there is no evidence. Abigail Williams finally took action and tried to get Proctor once in for all. Abigail accuses Mrs. Proctor of using “witchcraft” which leads to John Proctor having to confess to cheating on his wife.
In conclusion Abigail Williams is always associated with guilt and sin all throughout The Crucible. Abigail Williams was a deceptive, sneaky, and all out sinner of a character. She showed this by The dancing, the false accusations, and being deceptive and making Proctor cheat. At the end of the story all of Abigail’s guilt caught up with her, and made her feel forced to leave the town of Salem. It is believed she died a year later at age 16.
