Everybody knows that the real problem with illegal drugs is that they cost too much, and they are so difficult to get that drug addicts need to commit crimes in order to feed their habits. If only people could go down to the nearest Seven-Eleven and buy a cocaine slurpee, or drive up to the window at McDonald’s and order a crack burger and a marijuana shake. People wouldn’t’t need to knock down an old lady and grab her purse, or commit a home invasion robbery.

Around sixty-six billion dollars a year is spent on illegal drugs. This shows that illegal drugs are a substantial portion of the Canadian economy. They take money away from legitimate jobs, products, and services. Statistics demonstrate that more than one million people are arrested for drug abuse in a single year, meaning that drug use is a widespread problem for law enforcement. It is clear that drug abuse contributes to property crimes as well as violent crimes such as theft and assault.

For these reasons, all drugs should be legal, inexpensive and easy to obtain.

One of the most compelling issues concerning drugs is that they encourage crime. Crime is a direct result of drug abuse, as it is often committed to supply the habit. Drug-related crimes include violations of the law such as possession and trafficking, vandalism, assault and domestic violence. Crimes such as theft fund further smuggling attempts or allows unrestricted use of the money earned from trafficking.

In other words, while some drug-related crimes are committed in order to collect cash, other such crimes are committed because the offender is intoxicated and not in control of his or her own actions. Some offenders of the law commit crimes while under the influence of drugs that are not even illegal, such as alcohol. For example, drunk driving is an offence, and domestic violence and other crimes often occur while the offender is under the influence of alcohol. This demonstrates that the relationship between drugs and crime does not always depend on whether the drug is illegal.

Another important issue is that the drug market takes money and work away from legitimate business activities. Drug addicts are more likely to get their money by illegal means rather than honest work at a job. Moreover, the money that they use to buy drugs is not available to purchase legitimate and basic necessities. Whatever salary they receive will go straight to feeding their addiction. The presence of drug dealers and buyers in the work place would not only badly reflect the business, but discourage people from entering those businesses because they would be frightened.

Crimes often occur in the places where drugs are bought and sold. Moreover, the dealers commit crimes in order to collect money from the buyers through force or to discourage the general public from observing their activities and reporting them to the police. These factors clearly show that, besides increasing the crime rate, drug-related activities harm the legitimate economic activities of the general public.

Drug abuse should be stopped by making drugs easier to obtain. The community requires an economic improvement in order to have a better lifestyle. Society needs to see less victims of violence. The humanity must see less property violations and less assaults and frauds in order to develop a better world. Thus, it is clear that all drugs should be legal, inexpensive and easily accessible.
