Malcolm X was an African-American civil rights activist and a Muslim minister who challenged the mainstream civil rights movement with his advocacy for Black nationalism and separatism. Born in Nebraska in 1925, he was raised in poverty and spent time in prison before joining the Nation of Islam in the 1950s. Known for his fiery speeches and uncompromising beliefs, he viewed white society as irredeemably racist and called for Black self-determination and pride. After leaving the Nation of Islam in 1964, he embraced a more inclusive vision of civil rights and worked to build bridges between different racial and religious groups. He was assassinated in 1965.
