Harriet Tubman was an African-American woman and abolitionist who was born into slavery in Maryland in the early 1820s. She escaped from slavery in 1849 and subsequently helped dozens of other enslaved people to escape through the Underground Railroad network. She was also a spy, nurse, and Union Army cook during the Civil War, and later became an advocate for women’s suffrage. Tubman is known for her bravery and determination in the face of adversity and oppression, and is celebrated as an American hero and symbol of the fight for freedom and equality.
