Do you still remember the smile from the first person who you had helped? If you remember that smile, then you remember the happiness of offering help until now. Both the young and the people after retirement receive more benefits in social activities. Though giving your help to not only benefit others but manage the time for yourself at the same time. It is a matter of mutual benefit.

People cannot control themselves very well all the time. Assume you have two choices now, playing a game or preparing for your next month’s test. I believe that majority of people would like to choose to play a game since you are yielded by your present desire and leave the task for the future.

But, if your test is just on tomorrow, you still have the same choices, you may have a totally different decision, besides you have given up on that course. Because you think it is more meaningful to spend time on review for now. In the economy, it is called the law of diminishing marginal utility. That is to say, the later to work, the less you may delay, the benefits of early laziness are not enough to cover the efficiency loss that you stop caused by work, so you start to work again.

Thus, the mandatory goal could be a method to improve someone’s efficiency.

Everyone’s lifetime is variable and limited. Except for the external factors like income, education, etc., if we generally divide a person’s time into two parts, one part is for himself and the other is for social activities. Most people feel difficult to put all of their time in any one of the parts, especially for helping others. Perhaps you think that your own business is much more important than putting time on others because it is pointless and meaningless to devote your time to help others. But in fact, it is not absolutely waste of your time.

Most of you had this experience. Before you go to college or university, you must finish forty hours of volunteer work to graduate from your high school with a diploma in Ontario. This is a requirement of the ministry which fits the opinion of teenagers obtains benefits from voluntary activities. If you love voluntary activities, then it is not a big deal for you, but if you do not like that, then you have to join some activities to earn the hours. This is a push to let teenagers begin to be volunteers. Hence, they can feel the time of helping others is more meaningful than usual, so that teenagers may addicted to that – they will volunteer again (Delargy, C., & Sanders, M.). When you do the voluntary activity, you also complete the requirement for yourself. Thus, offering help and doing your own thing depend on each other, they are complements in some situations, the ratio of the time you help others and the time you do your own thing must exist. During some special periods, you need to combine these two things together in order to maximize your happiness, it means that helping others does not waste your time. On the contrary, devoting your time is probably a way to save your time.

If people do not get a schedule or due day, you will probably keep the ineffective life and infinitely put off the work. But a mandatory requirement is an invisible force to push you forward. Only you have a limited time can you change your lazy life to be more efficient. Doing your own thing is definitely a way to be happy. Nevertheless, in some cases, you should give up your self-centered thoughts to adequately devote your time to others. This is not a waste of your time, it is a manner to be a timesaver. Moreover, helping other people is equivalent to having better planning for yourself. Human life is finite and momentary, we should plan for it and gain the greatest happiness and satisfaction by starting to help others.
