Feelings about Courage in Reading Books

When we read books like “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel or “The Wright Brothers” by David Mccullough both of which display great moral and physical courage it can really inspire us to display great courage ourselves. When we read those books we think if Pi can survive being stranded on a boat with a tiger for 277 days or the Wright brothers can overcome a poor childhood and insurmountable odds to become the first people to ever fly a plane imagine the great things I can accomplish in my own life with courage like theirs. When we read great books like those along with countless others the possibilities are endless to what we could accomplish because literature when used the right way can change our lives forever.

What is Courage

Courage is a very important characteristic to have and one that could be helpful in many situations. What is courage? Is it the ability to prove yourself in war. Or the strength it takes to decide you will not fight. Is courage being yourself when you’re different from everyone else. Is it doing something that even your own father thinks you can’t do. Is courage synonymous with honor. Is it speaking up, even if doing so puts you in danger. Risking death for the person most precious to you. Or risking death for strangers. Is courage facing your fears, no matter how big or small they might be.

For Pi the physical courage meant facing his fears and doing whatever it took to stay alive while stuck on a boat with a tiger. Pi’s moral courage was maintaining a strong belief in God to stay alive, “The lower you are, the higher your mind will want to soar. It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God.”(pg. 283-284). Pi uses courage to help him survive the sinking of the Tsimtsum, his belief in god made him have confidence to survive on the lifeboat for 277 days and a few days on the carnivorous island where the algae turns acidic and kills anything living like when Richard Parker kept going back to the lifeboat before nighttime and how the lemurs slept in the trees rather than staying underground.
