Bubonic plague is a highly infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The disease is transmitted to humans through bites from infected fleas that live on rats or other small animals. Symptoms of the bubonic plague include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and chills. If left untreated, the disease can progress to septicemia or pneumonia, which are often fatal. Historically, bubonic plague epidemics have caused widespread death and fear, particularly in Europe during the Middle Ages. Today, the disease is rare thanks to modern antibiotics and public health measures.
