The Black Death, also known as the bubonic plague, was a devastating pandemic that swept through Europe in the 14th century. It was caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, which was carried by fleas living on rats. The disease spread quickly, killing an estimated 75 to 200 million people across the continent. Symptoms included fever, chills, vomiting, and painful swelling of the lymph nodes. The disease spread so rapidly that it was difficult to contain, and it took years for Europe’s population to recover from the devastating effects of the Black Death.
