The Role of Motivation in Classroom Management

A good and smooth-sailing classroom discussion begins with a creative and powerful motivation. Even if the teaching strategies and educational tools are good, a classroom discussion would not be successful without the aid of a good motivation. Motivation is an integral part of the success of the teaching-learning process inside the classroom (Oelmuller 2007). Through motivation, the students are aroused to listen, participate, discover and learn during the classroom discussion. There are two types of motivation namely intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation refers to the inner drive that comes from the selves of the students.

This drive causes the students to become curious or excited about something. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, comes from the outside factors such as parents, teachers, friends, community and the like. These outside factors cause the students to become inquisitive of something that leads to further study or obtaining of information. It is very important for the students to get motivated before the start of the class or lesson so that they will have the desire to move further in the discussion.

If a particular lesson will be introduced by creative and purposeful motivational activities such as games, simulations, video presentations and the like, there is a great possibility that the students will have the desire to study more about the lesson. For instance, before starting the lesson about mammals on biology, the teacher may use a game called “Mammal Bingo”, a game similar to bingo but the pictures of the mammals are used instead of the numbers, to set arouse the interest of the students to the topic.

Through this motivational game, the lesson will be introduced creatively to the students.

Furthermore, in order to attain a successful motivation, the teacher should let the students to fulfill their needs in accordance to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Griffin & Moorhead 2009). When the needs of the students in terms of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and the like are fulfilled and satisfied, it is easier to create a motivational mood to the students. Nevertheless, it is not enough that the teacher will always use the various educational tools or teaching strategies in order to motivate the students. It is likewise important that the teacher will teach the students to improve their self-determination skills.

Self-determination can be largely associated to the very essence of intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation causes an individual to select certain stimuli which can create attentiveness and curiosity. This curiosity leads the individual to desire for obtaining further information. In this case, the person is said to be intrinsically motivated since his behavior arises out of his own sake to fulfill his curiosity (Oelmuller 2007). Through this self-determination capacity, the students will motivate themselves to study and learn further about their lesson everyday.

Hence, it is important that the teacher will motivate the students both intrinsically and extrinsically. In total, motivation is indeed an integral part to make the educative paradigm successful.
