A Reflective Essay on the Profession of a Teacher

The profession of teaching is similar to a formula. As one may study and observe the field of education it is often believed to be an “easy” job until the research of it goes further in depth. Behind the basic ideas of a teacher’s classroom that is portrayed, there are more complex aspects to the job requirements than one may realize. In addition to being a role model to students, teachers are required to develop many different styles to teach with.

Teachers are also expected to present new and creative learning opportunities, as well as be able to work together with co-workers to achieve the most within the profession. Although these are all important aspects, instruction, class management, and value added assessments are some of the most important areas involved.

In schools today, being a high school student myself just a year ago, teachers can be easily questioned on why they are teaching a specific way by the students. Although students themselves don’t understand why information is being presented a certain way, every teacher has a very good explanation to that question.

A main concept of teaching is instruction. A couple reasons why this is so important in teaching are because it is able to provide the classroom with a structured learning environment, and it helps create the best opportunities for the students to achieve in the course. Instruction can differ in a wide range from classroom to classroom, as it is based on how the teacher believes will best provide their student’s to succeed.

Through research and studies it has been shown that daily review is an important part of instruction. Daily review helps recall previously learned information easily, and with practice on specific material every day it does help the student retain the information. As stated by Rosenshine (2012), “The review of previous learning can help us recall words, concepts, and procedures effortlessly and automatically when we need this material to solve problems or to understand new material” (Principles of Instruction,). Another strategy that Rosenshine has studied within instruction of a classroom is to ask a large number of questions about the information to the students, and after check all of their results. By using this method it is helping the student learn the information more through practice.

Teachers are required to teach a sufficient amount of information in the short one hundred and eighty two days of school that they have with their students. In order to do so class management is necessary to have. Classroom management creates expectations for the classroom, and it can also help the teacher engage with the students more effectively. One example of class management is the ability a teacher has to create a successful lesson plan and continuously follow it throughout the school year. Teachers must develop a lesson plan and get it approved by their administration. Lesson plans for teachers in Ohio are based on the Curriculum provided, as well as Ohio’s Learning Standards. Although students get easily distracted, or one area of focus may take longer than expected to finish, it is necessary to work with the lesson plan to the best of ability in order to successfully teach the students all of the required information. Lesson plans and the standards are so important to succeed in because they affect student’s test scores, as well as the schools educational reputation. As it is said in Ohio’s Learning Standards (2017), “Ohio measures the performance of its schools based on how well students are progressing in gaining the knowledge and skills within the learning standards”. Another example of good classroom management is to engage your class into the lesson as much as possible. Students enjoy learning and obtain the information more clearly when they are learning it hands on rather than just listening to a teacher lecture.

While teachers do have to go through school and training to obtain a degree and license in the profession, the educational stand point continues further. Value-added assessments have many benefits to them when they are included in a classroom. New teachers in the field have to learn the style of teaching that best works for them. Often times the hardest point in a teacher’s career are the struggles within the first few years where they are experimenting with multiple teaching habits, and trying to structure their classroom. This is an easy way that these assessments could provide help to a teacher’s exploration. For example, a teacher might want to try different teaching styles at different points of the school year. With giving the students an assessment with each different style put in place, the teacher is able to record the results of the tests and compare them at the end of the year. A teacher may find out that one way was better than the other based on the students test scores from these assessments. These assessments could also be used as part of a presentation to administration, if one is asked why they would be a good qualified candidate for a raise, or a better position opportunity in the school.

By being a part of this tutoring experience I have learned a great amount about myself, the students I was able to work with, as well as classroom experiences, and teaching experiences, and teaching by itself. The field experience taught me more about what aspects as a teacher I am good at, and what could be improved than I had expected it to. One strength I have as a teaching candidate is instruction. With each different student I was assigned to, I immediately caught myself learning their habits and learning styles without specifically meaning to. I was then able to approach each student’s tutoring session appropriately and plan on what was best for each of them. Every time after the very first session with them, they each knew how I taught towards them, and I knew how they behaved when learning with me. A weakness I realized that I had was classroom management in a sense. Although the students did respect me and enjoy tutoring with me, sometimes they would start to get tired or annoyed that they had to read during recess. I learned how to positively reinforce them overtime, but in the beginning I did struggle with getting the students to cooperate, and I lost sight that I was there to teach and not be their friends. I plan on addressing this weakness by reading and researching examples. A good resource I have found is “Seven Strategies for Building Positive Classrooms” in Educational Leadership.

Another weakness that I currently have is providing value-added assessments. The program of which I was working in previously made the lesson plan for each day the student was on in their current books, and the tutors just followed the instructions for the day. I plan to experiment with this technique in my future field experiences. A following way I plan to use these assessments are by mock teaching my friends and family on a subject and each time using different teaching styles to do so, then recording my results.

With research, personal experiences, and gaining knowledge about the profession it is helpful to gain insight about the responsibilities that are expected of teachers. Teachers put more personal time and effort into their job requirements than people may realize. As there are multiple different concerns that could affect ones teaching styles and classrooms it can be very complex. With all of the styles in mind the most important are in fact instruction, classroom management, and value-added assessments. Not only will these key factors help the teacher personally, but they will also greatly help achieve a successful classroom.
