Stress has been linked to the cause of illness through direct or indirect routes. It involves a physical change (i.e. an increase in heart rate), and changes in ones health habits (i.e. eating less/more). Physicians like Phillips, Der, and Carroll completed a study with evidence showing that individuals who are highly stressed, died 17 year prior to those who weren’t (Ogden, 2017). Being able to effectively manage one’s stress is important because it enables the individual to live a healthier and more productive and rewarding life (Robinson, 2018).
When I experience stress, I often become frustrated, irritable, loud, use a lot of foul language, mostly because it is very hard to see the positive in the moment.
A lot of my stress is uncontrollable (stemming from my environment ), so I also tend to experience migraines, my back and knee pain would intensify, and sometimes, I can feel my heart beating rapidly. My eating and sleeping habits are often affected, as well as my socializing habits and the desire to do anything pleasurable.
I find that stress affects me physically, emotionally, cognitively and behaviorally (Verve Health, 2020), that is why it is important to learn and practice healthy stress-management skills.
There are many different tips that can be found while researching that offer relief from stress, the three that I found to be most applicable to me are; maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing my time better, and socializing Robinson, 2018). Living a healthy lifestyle would consist of me eating healthy; starting with breakfast (a meal I often skip), yoga/meditation.
Time-management, can be done by creating a list of my priorities and taking them on in an orderly fashion (greatest to least importance) in order to maximize my time and make space for things I enjoy. Once I am able to manage my time well, I can be able to spend more time with my family and reconnect with friends I haven’t seen or spoken to in ages. By practicing these tips, I will not only be able to improve my physical well-being, but also increase my longevity, reduce tension/anxiety, and help to increase my mindfulness, making me better prepared when faced with stressful situations.
