I would have never believed that one conscious choice could change my entire life. A choice to become healthy. At some point in our lives, we go through setbacks that can affect us very deeply, and it might lead to many life-time consequences. Mine was when my youngest brother got sick with an unfamiliar disease that might occur once in one hundred years, as the doctors said. I was totally destroyed; it was an overwhelming shock and my hopes in life were dashed completely.
So, I interpreted these sad, tough and miserable times into eating excessively as a reliever from unpleasant emotions, and I had gained almost 50 pounds in a short period of time. My activity level was nowhere close to what it was back then, my fitness level had dropped, and I had no energy to exercise. However, miraculously, after six months, my brother was able to heal and regain his full strength. So, I set new goals to change my lifestyle and see if healthy living would make any difference.
All that I needed was some motivation, willpower, and patience to see if I was truly going to recapture the power that I had.
At that time, I had several things going for me. First, my wonderful brother who made the same choice that I did. We started buying healthy food and increased our activity level together. I couldn’t make this change without him. Second, I have friends who wanted me to become healthier. We made our own bet to see who could lose the most weight.
This added some competitive spirit to my quest.
Now I had to establish a routine how to make myself become healthier. I found many sources that could help me achieving this goal. One, I started to read Men’s health Magazines, and combined their tips into my personal life, but not on any scale to make difference in my fitness level. I often wished to be as fit and healthy-looking as the models in the magazine, but I did not make the effort that required. Another source is that I was able to use the Abs diet book, which includes a simple and new strategy in eating, joining foods to encourage weight loss and muscle building. I bought this book and started to read and apply the principles to my diet.
I had become accustomed to eating three large meals during the day and a snack before bed. However, I had to divorce these old eating habits and marry the truth of my unlimited capacity to achieve better fitness results. Therefore, I begun to follow new core principles to reach my goals. One of the core principles is to eat more often during the day, with three main meals and three substantial snacks in between. I cut back on the fatty and sugary junk and begun to make healthier choices. So, I started to follow what is recommended in the Abs diet book including leans meats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I had to force myself to eat that often because this process helped to increase my metabolic rate. After two to three months, I started to feel more dynamism, and I sensed that my body was burning this food constantly, rather than resting to digest a large meal. After a while, I managed to buy a treadmill, so I could exercise at home, because I thought that it would incorporate into my fitness plan. Also, I knew that I wanted to build muscle mass as part of my fitness plan. Luckily, there was a gym near to where I live that I could join.
The gym became my second home. I tried to go to the gym 4 times a week during the first few months of my program, because I managed to burn fat as efficiently as possible. I found that experts have recommended circuit training as a fast and effective work out for fat loss. At the gym, I try to do two abs circuits and two full body circuits with minimal rest in between. I always feel exhausted after working out, but more satisfying is the feeling of accomplishment. Now I have the three pieces (motivation, diet, and exercise) in place to start my lifestyle transformation.
In sum, if there is a will, there is everything. Despite of all the struggle and the traumatic periods that I have been through, which affected me negatively, I was able to rise again, go beyond my goals, and uncover my mission which will never end. I will continue for the rest of my life and career leading a healthy life-style. All that it takes is to start believing in yourself, act on that belief, pursue your goals at whatever coast, and the whole world will be at your fingertips.
