Why We Should Adopting Pets From Animal Shelters

Categories: Animal

One of the greatest feelings many have is owning a pet. Pets make great companions due to their undeniable love and compassion for their owners - this is evidence of the popular saying “A dog is a man’s best friend.” According to Gail Buchwald, the vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Cares (ASPCA), 'finding the right pet requires patience and the right connection between owners and pets, and shelters are the best place to find that mix.' Many people prefer to adopt their pets from pet shops than animal shelters because they typically sell what people would want in an ideal pet - a pure-breed puppy or kitten.

Although pet shops seem like a good source to adopt dogs, it is an environment that contributes to the horrible reality of puppy mill factories; as a result, people should start to adopt pets from animal shelters to prevent overpopulation and to start a loving family for dogs that have been neglected. Each year, there are more than 6.5 million animals are in the U.S animal shelters.

However, the number of dogs and cats are killed are about 2.7 million because there is not enough space in the animals shelters for all of the pets.

Gail Buchwald, the vice president of the ASPCA, claims, “Finding the right pet requires patience and the right connection between owners and pets, and shelters are the best place to find that mix.” Buchwald uses the fact that when people adopt a pet in the animal shelter, they are rescuing an animal by giving it a new chance to live.

The animals in the shelters are generally the rejected pets that the typical person would not want to adopt.

This is because they are usually seen as undesirable due to their mixed breeds, old age, health issues, etc.

The problem is not because of the pets, but their owners. Animal shelter pets consist of strays and also dogs who have been abused emotionally and mentally by their owners. Their previous owners couldn’t take care of their pets, or they changed their mind and decided to not keep their pets anymore, so they end up at the animal shelter with no choice. People might have many options to entertain themselves and having a pet can be an option; however, the pet does not feel like that. As a pet, it considers its owner as its priority. Pets bring joy to the human, and they deserve to be treated with love. People stray from these factors since they would want a popular breed puppy that would be ideal for their family. However, adopting a pet is not like purchasing a new car or computer.

Families should take the dogs in the shelters for consideration. These pets, no matter where you adopt them from, will give you unquestionable compassion for years. As a result, the appearance of a dog doesn’t matter as long as you love and agree to support him. Animal shelters are a good environment to find the perfect dog for families because there are so many varieties of dogs of different sizes, breeds, personalities, and histories. These varieties are important when it comes to finding a dog that is compatible with your family’s lifestyle. It is a necessity to adopt pets from shelters because it gives a new permanent home for pets that have been neglected in the past, and it also helps prevent the euthanization of the animals from overpopulation. Pets from the animal shelters have certain advantages over pets from pet shops.

Adopting pets from the animal shelter is a simple, cheap, and effective process. This process includes the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and sometimes microchipping. In addition, most of the pets are house-trained, so their owners don’t have to take their time to train them, which is time-consuming. And last but not least, there is a fostering program which gives pet owners a trial before they decide whether adopting is suitable for them. Buchwald states that 'adopters tend to feel more secure with the fostering program.. very often it leads to adoption.' Buchwald's claim is effective because he uses the logos to explain why adopting is an easy process for everybody, and it has many advantages so that more people can consider adopting pets than buying pets. Buying pets from pet shops can cost a lot of money, depending on the type of breed. These pets can vary up to thousands of dollars, and that doesn’t even include the medical expenses.

On the other hand, pets from shelters cost around $100 with included expenses. Pet shop pets are known to have medical and behavioral issues due to how they were bred. This is due to the intentions of the breeders. The only reason why they breed dogs to make the ideal looking dog is to make a profit. As a result, they don’t care how they take care of the dogs. Most of the people do not know the cruel reality of puppy mill factories. Puppy mill factories are facilities where pets are bred in small and unsanitary cages that lack the dog’s basic needs. 'Puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. And after they're no longer profitable, breeding dogs are killed, abandoned or sold at auction.' By using logos, Buchwald gives the audience the reasons why adopting pets from animal shelters are persuasive. Therefore, encouraging people to stop buying pets from animal shops not only save people a lot of money but also to give a chance for a stray pet to live. These mills mistreat dogs severely, and their only motivation is to make money from breeding them.

For example, when female dogs can no longer give birth due to physical depletion, they are killed. In addition, breeders do not care for the dogs’ health in the long run. As a result, the breeding process often leads to the puppy being born with hereditary conditions and disease because it is not natural for dogs to breed in that way. People should stop buying their pets from pet stores since it contributes to puppy mills that severely mistreat dogs. Instead, they should adopt from pet shelters because there are so many dogs that need loving homes. It is also important to adopt animals to decrease the number of animals being killed each year.

Pet shops get their puppies from the puppy mills, which is a place that places dogs in cramped cages with no fresh air to breed. As a result, these dogs are born with health issues due to careless breeding. Pets should be treated as a family member, and not as an item. Therefore, people should avoid buying pets for the purpose of their appearance of the breed, age, etc. It doesn’t matter as long as that dog has the right personality for you and your family. By giving the pets more love and people will be surprised by what they can be received back.
