Why I want to study Biology

I have always been fascinated by the way human body functions. However, after discovering my brother was diagnosed with Down syndrome and experiencing how it can affect a person and their family, it sparked in me the interest to discover more about genetics and drawing me even more to study Biology to develop my knowledge in this field. To me, Biology is a career path that I believe strengthens and develops an individual to solve the most urgent and critical problems and challenges.

As a person, I enjoy taking on challenges, particularly toward a rewarding objective. Although the subject Biology can be viewed as a difficult carrier path, I believe that it is also gratifying as the main aim of biologists is to work to protect, preserve and modify the world. My choices at A-level were also influenced by my passion to study this subject, A-level biology has given me a hands-on approach to practical sessions and help me to improve my laboratory skills.

I had also to complete many dissections, including the lungs and heart, which was especially fascinating as I could physically see the anatomy and the way in which they function. Alongside Biology I study Chemistry that focuses on the complex chemicals that interact to make organisms, while Geography gives me a better perspective of earth science as well as how disease links with the culture of a particular population.

Biologists are expected to work as a team, which means that good communication skills will be needed as well the ability to analyse situations in order to drive the research field.

Through the volunteering that I have done at a charity shop, I have gained this skill. My work consisted of communicating with the customers, pricing the products and organising the shop. It also included interacting with other volunteers, negotiating with people as well as structuring a big task in a way that makes it easily executable. I had also gain interpersonal skill and had the chance to learn from others in my team. For example, I enhanced my sales technique after collaborating with a more experienced colleague.

During the summer holiday I attended AEP programme, through which I had the opportunity to experience university first hand by going to the campus and attending lectures. This has strengthened my knowledge about Biology. Throughout the summer school, I also had the chance to speak with professionals along with biology students; this made me aware of the challenges associated with this field but at the same time I have understood how to balance the workload with social life. I have also realized that skills that I retain, such as teamwork and communication as well as practical skills are important for this course.

During my third phase of NCS, I had to work with my team in a charity project involving homelessness. I was part of the logistics team and my role consisted of producing the timetable for the week and making sure that the timetable and risk assessment were being followed. I had to manage buying the resources through calculating the budget and the fundraising target. This project has allowed me to further utilise my spoken communication skills within a team and with adults.

In my free time I enjoy drawing as it gives me the freedom to express myself. I also take part in clubs in school, like badminton and K-pop club. As I'm fluent in Italian language, in my free time I also teach young kids who are interested in learning an extra language, which has helped me to strengthen my listening skills.

I strongly believe I have the perfect motivation to study biology at university. I also have the sort of mental maturity and capacity that are needed to pursue higher study in this field. As a person, I'm proactive and empathetic to my surroundings and community. I truly feel I'm completely ready to get integrated into the university community and pursue my studies in the subject that I dreamed of for quite long.
