I had lot of choices from which I had to decide a better career path. The choice hasn't been easy for me as this choice will be my future, with what I will have to live my entire life. Various factors mattered considering which I had to make a decision. I had to decide the career path which would give me happiness doing work in the long run of my life, along with the mental satisfaction, worldly pleasures as well as the success label.
While going through all the factors that I felt would give me happiness, I came to a realization that nothing but study in an Australian University would be just the right choice for me. I have had in depth strolling with the ideas and with the reviews received and counseling from relatives and friends, I came to a decision that nothing but this satisfies all my needs. The standard of education that the institutions in Australia offer, friendly environment for international students and cultural diversity attracts me towards the country.
Also, with the advanced research facilities available, Australia is my obvious choice.
I am Bishal Shrestha, an international applicant from Nepal. I currently live in Pabitranagar, Kathmandu. There are four members in my family which is probably a nuclear family. My father is a businessman; my mother is a housewife; one younger sister and myself. From my early childhood I dreamt of supporting the business environment, watching my parents engaged in their business activities I learned that no business is small or big.
Nepal is a developing nation and it has many potential opportunities but due to lack of innovation and manpower, pace of development is not so good. With my knowledge and skills, I dream of making my country a better place to live. As far as my academic background is concerned, I passed my SLC examination (Year 10) on April, 2015 A.D. from Shree Ganesh Himal Secondary Boarding School with 80.5%. I have completed my high school (10+2 or Year 12) from Southwestern State College, where I attended my management courses including Principle of Accounting, Economics, English, Computer Science and Business Mathematics with 74.5% on May, 2017 A.D.
During my high school, I also attended several presentation classes where I generated excellent presentation skills. This was only possible because of the presentation facility provided by my high school. While I was in school, I developed communicating skills with teachers and my fellow friends in English. After completing my high school choosing to continue my study here in Nepal or travelling for abroad studies was difficult. Soon I realized I had to pursue my further study, get more knowledge and experience if I have to fulfill the dream I was chasing. From much consultation from friends and family I found that studying abroad especially in a new environment will be best for my future. The initial stage for study in abroad was to give IELTS exam. Not to mention that the applicant has to secure deserving marks in IELTS so that he/she could get enrolled in the leading universities of foreign countries. As per the requirement, I gave IELTS exam on February, 2018 A.D. and obtained 8.0 in listening, 6.5 in reading, 6.0 in speaking and 6.0 in writing with overall band score of 6.5 which in my perspective is a good band score for proceeding with the idea of studying in overseas.
Why Australia? With the globalization, world has become a global village and competition has become immense. To compete in the global environment, one needs a globally recognized degree and an exposure to the international market. This is the reason that I want to study abroad. Question arises why choose Australia? Australia has education standards that rank amongst the third highest in the English-speaking world, behind the UK and the USA. Degrees are internationally recognized. Their graduates will have global opportunities. Australian education system has a global recognition, schools and employers from all over the world recognize Australian degree, making Australia destination for students from different nation. Studying here provides me with an opportunity to cope up with students from different nations; learning to adopt in a culturally diverse place will help me to enhance my ability to deal with diversity in work place.
Moreover, I can learn to be independent if I am away from my family. Living expenses and tuition fees are considerably lower in Australia compared to that of other countries. Institutions in Australia offer a wide variety of courses so that international students can easily find the schools and the courses that suit them. Different acts like ESOS, CRICOS and TPS are implemented in Australia in favor of international students. As my research kept on going about these acts, I found that the ESOS (The Education Services for Overseas Student) act safeguards the rights of international students studying in Australia which can be considered as the plus point for international students to enroll in Australian University as they can feel secured against severe violence and bullying. As per the Tuition Protection Service (TPS) act, a placement and refund service can be assured to the international students, which are initiated in the event that the institution is unable to teach the course of international applicant. When I came to know about CRICOS (The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Student) act, I realized that it is about a register of Australian education institute which are striving to recruit, enroll and teach overseas students and through registration on CRICOS, educational providers are allowed to offer courses to overseas, or intending to study, in Australia on Student visa, which is why I am authorized to take part in the educational institution of Australia. Such kind of acts ensures the welfare and provides privilege to the global scholar, and I am more satisfied to select Australia as my priority. The past data shows that Australia has always been ahead as far as student’s choice is concerned.
Among the different cities located in Australia, I found Sydney as my destination for studying and my prior investigation led me to the fact that Sydney is a very fascinating place to live, with different part time job opportunities for students to work during their studies. The University that I am enrolling for is located in Sydney. With the multicultural society and perfect weather, Sydney is an obvious choice for various international students. When I explored about the Sydney from various websites, I came to know that Sydney is also one of the most student friendly cities with beautiful surroundings, temperate climate and diverse group of population. With warm summer and mild winter, it will be smooth transition towards weather adjustment. International students can be accustomed to the cities in no time due to the friendly and hospitable people, diverse festival and events, and quality of life.
Why not other countries? The choice which I made for studying in overseas brought me to conduct various researches on other countries like USA, UK, Japan, Korea, Canada and comparison with Australia. While pursuing on my research, I came to know about one of the top three English-speaking destinations: USA, UK and Australia. Then, I thoroughly researched the top universities of USA and UK providing the similar courses that I am thriving for to study in Australia. Universities of USA like Stanford University, Harvard University, and Yale University are some of my research subject and I came to conclusion that these elite universities provide standard education with highly qualified degree to students. However, applying to college in the USA is a very lengthier and rigorous process. Admission is based on SAT/ACT test scores, high school qualifications, and extracurricular activities. There is a lot of competitive for places on the top courses and a lower acceptance rate for international students. The living expenses and tuition fee in USA is higher than Australia; it doesn’t respond to my family’s financial budget. Furthermore, there is no gun control policy in USA which in my point of view is not much safer than Australia to stay. Similarly, some of the well-known and highly reputed universities of UK like Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Bristol University have the same case as USA in terms of budget and level of study. Both of the countries have a good reputation for quality higher education like Australia, although, Australia stands atop my choice; being one of the safest and friendliest study destination in the world, and not to mention that it’s living expenses and tuition fee is inexpensive in comparison to UK and USA. Other countries like Canada have an extreme cold weather condition which makes settlement unfavorable for international applicant like me. Though India is the nearest destination for Nepalese applicant the educational system is identical to Nepal. As for Japan, China and Korea special native language is needed; it appoints language barrier for the students who are seeking to study in abroad. My evaluation and inspection towards numerous countries led me to decide Australia as my acceptable destination for educational purpose.
Why not Nepal? Considering my home country for graduation in Bachelor, the degree of Nepal is of limited value. The Education system of Nepal is fairly backward. At present, higher education in Nepal is offered by six universities: Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PokhU), Purbanchal University (PurU), Lumbini Buddha University (LBU), Mahendra Sanskrit University (MSU). Different colleges found in Nepal are affiliated with such universities. As I have completed my +2 level under management stream, I am qualified to study Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor in Information Management (BIM) and Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) which is interconnected with the area of accounting in Nepal. However, university in Nepal lacks quality to provide better education system in the field of accounting. Most of the university highly focuses on theoretical method of teaching rather than practical based. There are not many institutions or enough scope to undertake quality qualifications in Nepal.
My future goal to compete globally in business environment further requires internationally recognized degree and degree of Nepal lacks the quality of international exposure. Moreover, study of Nepal may not help students to build intellectual way of thinking and behaving as institutions in Nepal doesn’t have well equipped lab and libraries. One of the common problems in Nepal is times of exams and results are uncertain which is mostly affected by unconditional prolonged strike. If I study in Australia I can earn better qualification, quality academic experience, excellent life experience, international exposure and many more, which cannot be attained by studying in Nepal. Basically, my assumption cannot be fulfilled by studying at my motherland.
