Theme Analysis Of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime

Categories: Opportunity

The Curious Incident of the dog in the nighttime. The theme of this book from my perspective are problems are just an opportunity to learn from and continue to grow from. To elaborate, problems are not the end of the road. Problems are not a dead-end. They are an opportunity like many others for us to learn and grow from. The title of this book corresponds to the theme because when reading the title and seeing the curious incident of a dog, you realize that this book will have problems that leaves room for opportunities for us as readers to learn from.

I believe that learning and understanding that problems are just an opportunity to learn from and continue to grow from, we can improve as humans as a whole.

The basic plot of the book is that this story tells the story of a gifted boy Christopher Boone. He investigates the killing of his neighbourhood dog, Wellington. This then leads on to new discoveries he has never known before.

Revealing too much about what he discovers counts as a spoiler, however there are quotes as well as other basic evidence to prove how the theme of this book relates to everything. An example of this is 'Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.' (Christopher Boone p.

12) This shows the theme because in the quote, it was stated that prime numbers are like life, they are logical but you could never work out the rules. Even if you spend your time thinking about it. If you really observe this, it falls along the lines of what I believe is the theme of this book. You can think hard about life and problems, or you can face them and take on challenges that Christopher never thought he would.

Once you finish the book, you might have came across this quote. 'And I know I can do this because I went to London on my own, and because I solved the mystery of Who Killed Wellington? And I found my mother and I was brave and I wrote a book and that means I can do anything.' (Christopher Boone p. 221) In depth, this quote relates to my theme of seeing opportunities and growing from them instead of treating them like a dead end. Christopher solves his mission he had been wanting to solve for such a long time, and in the end, he never gave up and ended up knowing more than he thought he did! In the quote, it states, I can do anything. This is a representation of how you need to keep going and never give up.

The setting of a book has an impact on the overall effect on the reader once he/she finished reading. The biggest part of the story takes place in Swindon and another part takes place in London. Other than that, they live in a normal house. I believe that in the context this was written, the message that the book left on me would have been the same in this setting or somewhere else. I believe that the setting should of course correspond to the theme and the scenario taking place. However, the context of the book and the message being put out should come from the quality, characters and plot. On the contrary, when picturing the book as your reading, you are picturing the setting that was given and receiving almost a ‘whole package’ in a way. In this book, I believe the setting, plot, and characters flowed well and really help create such a great book like this.

This book has many characters. Some main characters that the book revolves around a lot of characters. The main are, Christopher, The father Ed Boone, his mom Judy, Mr. and Mrs. Shears and Siobhan. In the beginning of the book, it is showed that Siobhan plays an important role in Christopher's life. I also believe the characters played a big role in the theme. The way these characters were written or portrayed really help picture this theme and this taking place in the real world. Christopher learns the lesson that these issues or problems life throw at you help you mature, and grow as a person. I believe from the beginning to the end, he really progressed and showed his development in that aspect. He learns that lesson by stepping out of his comfort zone and exploring the world around him. Aside from his home, aside from his prime numbers, his detestment of certain colours, and aside from having his disability prevent him from being who he can be. The same quote would be showing this. 'Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.' (Christopher Boone, Chapter 19, p. 12) Overall, I believe that the way we see these characters play a role on what we believe is the theme of this book.

In the book, there are certain objects/symbols that represent important things for Christopher. These include: a swiss army knife that symbolizes security, Dogs, Wellington's death symbolizes Christopher's loss of trust and diagrams/graphs show what goes on in Christopher's mind. Whenever he feels anxious and worried, he draws a diagram or creates a long list of numbers to calm himself. I believe all of these symbols play an important role because without these, we would have a completely different opinion or vision on the theme of this book as a whole. Without some of these things, Christopher won't feel safe. With these objects, he can continue to accelerate and continue to grow and explore.
