The characters are: Wes Moore(author), Joy Moore, Wes Moore(prisoner), Nikki, Shani, Tony, Mary,and Westley Moore. The book shows how the two Wes Moore's were brought up and how their different choices changed their future for the better and the worse throughout their lives. One is successful while the other is in jail.

Wes was still lured by the world of drugs. Wes’ attendance in school had been unpredictable. During the nine months that Wes had been attending the Work Corps, he had sharpened his abilities in carpentry ad was at his most joyful. In any case, once clearing out and attempting to make a genuine living, Wes learned how exceptionally small cash he may make and began “cooking coke” once more. Before long after, Wes got to be included in an equipped jewelry store burglary that finished with one guard being shot and murdered.
