The Impact of My Parents on My College Life

My parents are the main factors whose influence has shaped me into who I am today and they are the most important and influential people in my life. I was born in a small city on the banks of the river Godavari in South India. Being the first child to my parents, I was raised with the utmost love and affection one can ever get. My parents played a crucial role in every stage of my life, and their positive way of raising me enabled me to get the best out of life.

The marital harmony of my parents had the largest impact on my identity and behavior. My mom and dad have been happily married for 19 years now and their positive relationship is what has taught me the value and importance of a family. Their relationship taught me about responsibility, sacrifices, decision-making, organization, and planning. Since childhood, they always taught me to care for others, put others before myself, treat everyone the way I want to be treated, and love everyone equally.

My family hails from India and we believe in Hinduism.

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, women were expected to traditionally live the life of a mother, wife, and daughter-in-law. My mom got married at the age of 20 and due to this, she had to give up her dreams and focus on taking care of the family so that she could be a devoted wife, mother, and daughter-in-law. In spite of the traditions and customs within my culture and religion, my parents raised me and my sister in a non-traditional setting, meaning they didn’t place any restrictions on our freedom and our dreams.

They have always encouraged us to fulfill our dreams no matter what they are, and focus on our education and career.

Due to family problems, my dad had to give up some of his dreams and goals for a while. However, when I was five, my dad moved to the USA to pursue his higher studies and provide a better future for my family and me. My mother is an example of how a hard worker should be as she also never gave up during hard times and failures. In fact, she too moved to the USA to accomplish her goal to achieve her second Master’s Degree. Their determination and dedication towards achieving their goals have always fascinated me and are big factors that shaped me into who I am today. I strongly believe that a clear vision coupled with determination and hard work will always help me achieve my dreams. I strive to work hard and never give up because I was taught that nothing comes for free and one has to work hard in order to achieve the goals.

Even though I am not different than my fellow beings, there are certain things that make me different from them which is what makes up my identity. My close observation of my family throughout my childhood has helped me improve my confidence and problem-solving skills. These qualities have enriched my ideology towards life. My philosophy of life is to never give up no matter how hard the problem might be.
