I am conducting this memoir to convey to girls my age, and younger than I am, the benefits of developing a healthy lifestyle. I believe I pose as a positive example to others in terms of health and self-improvement. As a grade-schooler, I was overweight, and continually reminded that I couldn't continue practicing unhealthy eating and sparingly participating in exercise. When I turned to running, and in high school competitive sport, I had my health on an impeccable track. I had never been more focused or goal-oriented as I was when I was a runner.
Because of this change in lifestyle, it is my goal to pose as a model to girls that there are many benefits to becoming active and healthy.
The sport kept me away from poor decision making, and involved me with a group of other girls involved with similar interests.
I gained a huge competitive edge in high school by being involved with sports, and I want to convey to readers how this played into other aspects of high school.
I gave myself the edge to be more (healthily) competitive with students, especially as I neared college years.
As a musician, I noticed myself becoming more competitive in the arts. These parts of my life improved tremendously, and it is my goal to establish these ideas for girls that have the opportunity to get on the right track for high school.
I selected an internet blog because of how much both the internet and blogs had on myself in high school.
High school students have huge access to the internet, and typically enjoy reading literature that applies to themselves.
One particular reason for choosing a blog was because of a blog I had read, that very well applied to my goals as an athlete, and still resonates with me. Megan Kalmoe, an Olympic athlete, wrote in her blog about her initial try at sports. She was a freshman in college, and had already gained the 'Freshman Fifteen,' and decided to take a shot at rowing. It turned out she had a natural ability, and made the national team upon graduation.
I idolized Kalmoe from this point, and hope to make this impression that there is so much benefit in unlocking potential. Running has contributed to my global citizenship style by making me more involved in the community. This has also made me more involved in current events. For example, when injured, I remained active in the community by volunteering for races. Many of these races were cause-based, benefitting The AIDS Institute, Moffitt Cancer Research Center, the Colon Cancer Alliance, and The Five Points of Life Foundation. Volunteering for these causes developed an interest for my education, and I am now studying to enter cancer research. This is how I plan to contribute to the community in the future.
