Task Analysis is essential for Human Resource Management. It recognizes the key tasks of a specific job to get a better understanding of skills, abilities, knowledge required to perform it. Suggestions and Recommendations
Task Analysis helped me to understand, what an Interior Designer do on a day-to-day basis.
I learned more about tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job position. Interior designers mostly focused on decorating, furnishing, and lightning. Interior Designer involved in architectural detailing and constructional planning. The job includes developing layouts and blueprints. Interior Designer must understand how to use space effectively. Interior Designers often co-work with architects, electricians, and building subcontractors to ensure that the design project meets construction requirements and standards.
In most cases, Interior Designers follow the same project development process. At first, the designer determines the client’s needs. The designer usually visits meetings with a client to find out the client’s preferences and budget. Next, the designer visits the place he is going to work with to take a look of positive attributes and potential problems of the space. After collecting primary information, he creates a design plan and estimates budgeting. Modern designers use computer software to create a detailed plan but first, they make design project sketches. When the design plan is completed, the designer presents it to the client and updates it due to his input.
When the design plan is ready, the designer specifies the materials and furnishing required. If the project is complex, the designer must get the approval of a construction inspector to make sure the design plan meets building standards. Then, the designer hires subcontractors to do a technical job.
Finally, the designer creates a timeline of schedules to make the job completed on time. The designer supervises the design process until the project is complete. When the work is complete, he presents the project to the client. If the client is not satisfied, the designer makes improvements, and then receives money for his job. Interior Designers work at office and studio. They also travel to clients’ homes and offices, visit showrooms, and design centers.
I collected data for the assignment from the Interior Designer with 10 years of experience. After analyzing tasks and duties, I should say, that Interior Designer includes too many responsibilities for one job position. It includes not only the creative part of designing but also financial, architectural, and constructional sides of design planning.
I would suggest hiring an Interior Designer assistant, who would take a part of the designer’s responsibilities to make the working process easier to manage. Interior Designer assistant could perform administrative tasks, such as ordering material samples. It would help Interior Designer to focus on design planning and increase the productivity of the company.
I would also recommend hiring a financial specialist or accountant, who would be responsible for budgeting and financial documentation under the designer’s supervision. It could help to make the time management process more effective, provide better budgeting, and reduce money wasting. An accountant could prepare agreements, reports, checklists, and contracts.
The company also may hire a graphic designer, who would create designs based on interior designer’s freehand drafts. It will help the designer to focus on detailed drafting and developing blueprints. A graphic designer would be responsible for creating realistic 3D models, interior designs and highly detailed drawings by using computer-aided design (CAD) applications. It would help Interior Designer to focus on the project and save time to meet deadlines.
The company also could hire subcontractors (engineers, builders, retailers, etc.) to collaborate with them on daily basis. They could sign a contract with small construction companies to save time and money on searching subcontractors for each new design project.
Interior Designer job position requires extra input from the company’s supervision. The task list includes many steps and it can be confusing for a designer to perform all of them effectively. I would recommend Harris Architecture to hire designer’s assistant to left administrative job to him. Having an assistant would help the designer to focus on design planning. It will increase his productivity without damaging a timeline or budget.
