Before gender inequality, during the beginning of the Paleolithic era, women and men were equal. When the Agricultural Revolution happened, societies began to form and with these societies came social hierarchies. These social hierarchies were classified mainly as slaves, common workers and the rich. Unknowingly women were slowly being etched out of the workforce and began to do housework and take care of children
In today’s society many people think that gender inequality is a thing of the past, it is not. While there are many articles saying how women make up almost 60% of college students and that nearly 40% of wives make more money than their husbands. There is still a pay wage gap in which women’s median weekly wage is only 83% of that compared to a man’s wage. But gender inequality is more than just about how much money someone makes or how many women go to college it is also about how they are treated. Sometimes in the workplace women can be made to feel lesser or unsafe due to comments or actions from male coworkers. When looking globally to gender inequality you look at countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Nepal and Sudan which are on the list of the worst places to be a woman. In some of these countries and more, women can not drive, can not vote, can not go into public without a man, can not get an education, can not have a say in who they marry, can not get into sports arenas and can not enter places of worship because menstruation is seen as unclean.
Today it is easy to become overwhelmed with everything going on in the world, but we must help to overcome gender inequality. For when we do the world is one step closer to being a better place. “We want to end gender inequality and to do that we need everyone involved.” says Emma Watson. There should not have to be reasons for some people to believe that gender inequality needs to end, we are all human at the end of the day. Throughout history women have been repressed and still are, however this generation has been standing up and maybe one day it will change.
