Anaerobic respiration is a type of cellular respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen. It involves the breakdown of glucose or other organic molecules to produce energy in the form of ATP. Unlike aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration results in the production of lactic acid or ethanol as byproducts. This process is commonly used by microorganisms in environments with low oxygen levels or during intense exercise when the body cannot supply enough oxygen to the muscles.
