Diversity and Baptist Hospital Diversity is an important quality to possess when dealing with many different facets of understanding and interacting with our society. According to Harvey, & Allard, 2015 diversity is defined as “how people differ that may affect their organization experiences in terms of performance, motivation, communication, and inclusion. Several companies take pride in their diverse abilities and management of people through many diversity elements. So, why is diversity vital, in our country we are surrounded by it in our workplace, schools, and many other identities.
To learn from one another we must have a level of understanding about each other, to appropriately communicate and form relationships. When we change our understanding of culture, the terms “patient-centered care,” “teamwork,” and “safety” may get a true ring to their applications in healthcare (Ong-Flaherty, 2015). Baptist Health South Florida is the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in South Florida, which is recognized for creating a diverse and inclusive team. They do their best to recruit and retain a multicultural workforce across their organization.
Baptist Hospital is committed to creating an all-encompassing environment that embraces all people and cultures. It has been a great example of having cultural diversity and inclusion, it is a driven organization, that truly recognizes that diversity is key for success. Baptist Hospital is a multicultural workforce who are committed to creating an inclusive environment and embracing all people and cultures. Being an employee of Baptist Hospital for about 15 years, I have witnessed and experienced the multitude of cultural richness.
The different values and behavior have taught me to appreciate and value others' opinions and learn to work effectively with people from other cultures.
Every employee needs to enjoy the same rights despite their disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, mental/physical abilities, race, ethnic heritage, language, geographic location, income, religion, education, and other differences. Baptist Hospital respects these dimensions and all the cultures around us and helps ensure the development of proficiencies that will connect the groups and individuals they interact with. Baptist Hospital continuously displays an array of employees of all ages, sexual orientations as well as races and ethnicity, and those with mental/physical abilities, nor do they deny anyone from a different geographic location, religion, or education. Workplace factors play a major role in determining the productivity and happiness of the employees. Baptist Hospital demonstrates these factors by providing social support, offering health insurance, recognizing their employees, there is growth potential and professional development, as well as an inclusive, clear, and communicative environment. When the employees are happy and feel appreciated they become more creative, innovative, and dedicated which leads to a more productive workplace. Baptists have refined the professional advancement program to clearly define career paths for any professionals at any stage of their careers. Availability of diversity-related material If an organization is serious about its commitment to diversity, one would expect that this would be reflected in the design, content, and graphics of the website” (Harvey, & Allard, 2015). In this age of time, websites are an important means of communication between organizations and their investors. The community seeks positive reinforcements that can be displayed on a well-designed website. Auditing a website is important for many reasons since the workforce today consists of workers from different races, cultures, religions, and backgrounds. Employers seek to ensure that diversity is included in hiring as well at all levels of their organization. Performing occasional diversity audits will help to make certain that this goal is met. Upon glancing at the Baptist Hospital of South Florida's website, and workforce diversity, it reveals some essential evidence of the working force inside this company. Baptist Hospital's website is a fundamental topic to study, because of its international impact, and work ethics. Once entering the Baptist Hospital webpage one can go to the search engine and type “Diversity”, and it will lead you to a page full of information regarding diversity in this organization with several subheadings that one can click on and would lead you to another page full of information. The website features several photographs of diverse employees hugging and smiling and engaging in hospital-based activities. Additionally, one will find graphics displaying their workforce ethnicity, and gender breakdown. One of the nurses stated, “She loved working at Baptist Hospital and meeting so many different people from all over the world” (Baptist Hospital of South Florida, 2018).
One of the positive sides of the website is that it did not reuse pictures or graphics on any of the other pages. As a potential employee, Baptist Hospital appears to have a well-organized webpage, with an extensive volume of organizational values, policies, awards and an adequate amount of information on diversity, and a lengthy list of job openings. Baptist Hospital's webpage information on cultural diversity will entice any diverse employees who would like to apply for any position in this organization. Just viewing the different photos of the diversity in this organization and the positive feedback from the employees and the graphic images with statistical information stating the ethnic workforce and their excellent international services should be a significant reason to be part of such an influential organization. I will apply for a job, knowing that they provide opportunities for employment to everybody regardless of their background. As a consumer, I will be using their services for the reason that I support an organization with a diverse team. According, to their website one statement that stands out to me was how “Baptist Health is dedicated to providing high-quality, cost-effective, compassionate healthcare services to all, regardless of religion, creed, race or national origin, including, as permitted by its resources, charity care to those in need” (Baptist Hospital of South Florida, 2018). The internal management issue that can affect the prominence diversity gets on the website is how well management manages their large culturally diverse employees. Employees have for a long time been having difficulty fitting in organizations because of the level of diversity among them. Based on the audit of this company’s website, I would feel confident in applying for a job, regardless of my age, race, sexual orientation, and disability. This organization is well-known for its cultural diversity as evidenced by the awards they have received and the positive words spoken by its employees. The usefulness of the diversity information In this era of technology, many companies such as Baptist Hospital are making an effort to succeed in cultural diversity in the workplace. Baptist Hospital is a large organization that hires employees from all sorts of different backgrounds. This brings about different benefits to the company as well as its employees. The environment of different races, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, geographic backgrounds, education, and economic background brings a work environment of thinking and communication styles. This unity enhances a healthier environment for working and helps avoid miscommunication based on cultural ignorance. Being so culturally diverse brings on increased productivity, creativity, and profits improves engagement, reduces turnover, and improves the organization's reputation. One of the achievements of Baptist Hospital is the way they utilize the fact-based decision-making approach. Using this method has had positive effects on the way they collect data, share, organize, and analyze it. Creative cross-cultural communication encourages innovative thinking amongst employees and which increases productivity and profit. Having a multilingual staff is a strong asset, especially when dealing with such a diverse community. With such a large number of employees, Baptist Hospital seems to keep its employees content and excited to be working for such a great organization. Diversity awards/Recognition Baptist has been recognized as the Fortune best company to work for and best workplace for diversity, women, and working mothers in 2017, and Best place for Latinos in 2016. With all these rewards and recognition, it is easy to see why Baptist Hospital is a great example for its employees and all the surrounding communities, and a great company to examine for my paper. As a top employer recognized by Fortune and Working Mother magazines, Baptist Health also offers family-friendly benefits and promotes a healthy work-life balance so our nurses will choose to stay at Baptist Health. Baptist Health is the most awarded healthcare system in South Florida by US News & World Report. Baptist Hospital earned a total of 22 high-performing honors in 14 types of care in the organization’s 2018-2019 America’s Best Hospitals Rankings. Baptist Hospital is ranked #1 in Miami-Dade County. Additionally, Baptist Health’s Centers of Excellence are all recognized as high-performing in their respective areas of expertise. Baptist Health ranks among the best hospitals in the U.S. according to government health studies and rankings systems like U.S. News & World Report (Baptist Hospital of South Florida, 2018).
Conclusion To benefit from having a diverse workforce requires strong leadership and integrated diversity initiatives that relate to the organization’s strategic goals. Effective diversity management requires change but the process needs to be deliberative and related to an organization’s core values. (Harvey, & Allard, 2015). Baptist Hospital seems to exceed all these aspects of a great organization and continues to supersede with all the outstanding employee and patient satisfaction as well as the involvement with all the minority vendors and not to mention all the awards and recognitions that are bestowed yearly. Diversity creates innovative ideas and solutions and presents opportunities and allows everyone to make connections. Nurses must be knowledgeable and able to effectively communicate with each other and our patients to achieve attainable goals and outcomes. Baptist Hospital is culturally diverse puts them a step closer to developing great relationships that lead to service excellence. As stated, Baptist Hospital provides customers and potential employees with a professional, full of information, easy to navigate, and opens up a two-way communication pathway website. As an employee of Baptist Hospital for many years, I believe this organization will continue to strive for excellence and maintain a high level of commitment to cultural diversity.
