Exploring the Cause and Effect of Solar Storms: An Informative Speech

Solar Storm Informative Speech Topic: Solar Storm Organizational Pattern: Cause and Effect General Purpose: Speaking to Inform Specific Purpose: This speech is to inform the public, including my fellow students, and instructor on the dramatic effect of a Solar Storm on society. Thesis Statement: When the Solar Storm hits earth it will eliminate all electricity and communication. The most recent recorded history of a major Solar Storm was in 1859 when their were no electrical grids, satellites or cell phones back then but now almost all societies rely on electricity.

In a Solar Storm they would be interrupted by such a storm.

Introduction Solar Storm can change the world in a manner not understood by society. It can put society back into the 1800’s. There will be lack of food, water, medical supplies and everything we take for granited will disappear. Are you ready for a Solar Storm (Attention Getter)? The purpose for this topic is for you to be aware for the potential hazards of the Solar Storm.

The sun goes in cycles every 11 years a component of the solar variation. In 1929, there was a significant Solar Storm as there was in 1958.

At that point in history we had no cell phones or satellite communications. In 1989, a solar storm hit Canada and took out their electrical grid along with the power grids on the east coast of the United States. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has predicted a significant Solar Storm in late 2012 or early 2013. This Solar Storm has the potential to take the electrical grid of United States, Europe, and China out of service for up to 2 years (Purpose and Thesis).

With this result around the world it could lead to total chaos.

What would you do if the electricity would not come on in 2 years, no water to pump by electricity, no hospitals that relay on electricity, and no food because no trucks or power to keep it refrigerated. A Solar Storms of this magnitude will disable 95% of cars with computers. You will not be able to drive a vehicle anywhere (Establish Credibility). Solar Storms will knock out electricity because it will destroy the electrical grid and it could take up to 10 years to restore the electrical grid in the United States and not to mention the rest of the world.

Without electricity most water supplies that depend on electricity will not be available, you can live up to 2 weeks without food but only 3 to 4 days without water (Preview of Main Points). Body 1. The sun is the source of all life but it could mean the end of life as well. NASA did a study and the findings are now available. * From the surface of the sun, a rolling mass of plasma, charged high energy particles that travel through space to areas down on the earth. * A giant fire ball, if that ball hit the earth in its magnetic shield it would be devastating (Britt, 2009). Conveyor belt on the sun, similar to the great ocean conveyor belt on earth. The great ocean conveyor belt is a network of currents that carry water and heat from the ocean. The sun’s conveyor belt is a current, not water but electrically conducting gas. * Sun has storms every 11 years, every year the magnetic field flips (Phillips, 2006). 1B. Solar storm a massive solar flare * Huge bubbles of gases are threaded with magnetic field lines, which are routinely ejected from the sun (Zabarenko, 2008). Disruption from a solar wind and produce disturbances that strike the earth with sometimes catastrophic results (Phillips, 2006). Transition: At this point I hope you have an understanding on how the sun and solar storm work; I will now be talking about the great history of the Carrington Event. 2. In 1859 the Carrington Event was the biggest yet of all storms. The first Solar Storm that marked history. * A humongous storm that wiped out telegraph poles and we tried to then estimate what kind of power can do that and now realize that we are very young in the space age. If something like the 1859 hit again, it would paralyze all the United States not just for a day or an hour but for months to years. Transformers would short circuit and burn out satellites which would be fried to a crisp (Britt, 2009). * The prediction is based partly on the storm in 1859, caused telegraph wires to short on parts of the United States and Europe and caused igniting widespread fires (Britt, 2009). * Before dawn the next day skies all over planet erupted in red, green, and purple auroras so brilliant that ewspapers could be read as easily as in daylight. Even places such as Cuba, Bahamas, Jamaica and Hawaii (Britt, 2009). * We have never before in our history, in human history, relayed so much on technology as we do today. Part of what they found while studying the Solar Storm was we rely so much on our ability to communicate by our computers. If your computer crashed it would handicap not just New York, a large size city but the eastern half of the United States the study finds (Nolan, 2011).

Transition: At this point I hope that the history of the Carrington Event is clear to everyone and has helped deliver a sense of its importance to how it can affect all of us. I am now going to describe what incidents have happened so far. 3. What has happened so far with the Solar Storm? * 1958/1929 solar maximum, Northern Lights was sighted three times in Mexico and intense auroras over Fairbanks, Alaska. * 1989, a solar storm hit Canada and took out their electrical grid along with the power grids on the east coast of the United States. 1994 Solar Storm caused major malfunctions to two communication satellites, disrupting newspaper, network television and nationwide radio service throughout Canada. * 2003 U. S. East Coast and Canada blackout * 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck * 2010 earthquake in Haiti (Britt, 2009) Transition: Now that I have discussed the issue about what has happened to draw up to this event, I will now talk about what might happen in 2012/2013. 4. What might happen in 2012 from a Solar Storm? Electric power grid could get wiped out by the current including New York City, Time Square. All Lights, computers, transportation, and hospitals, all would go down. * Study warns it would be a disaster and all would go down far worse then we have ever seen before (Nolan, 2011). * The Solar Storm posses a bigger threat to more high tech and advanced country like the United States everything from the sewage systems to Wall Street Banks that operate within the power grid (Britt, 2009). * Like a lackout, they only last for a few hours to a day but if you start to short circuit the transformers and blow out the satellites and fry the communication grid then it could knock out the Unites States for months before we can get enough rescue crew and repair people, to not just handle one city but hundred of cities around the United States (Britt, 2009). * Emergency services would be strained command and control might be lost (Britt, 2009). Conclusion In a blink of an eye one of the most advanced civilization mankind has ever known could be crippled.

Our reality will revert to how it was for those living in 1800s without access to computers, electricity, vehicles, and communication. This storm is coming it has been predicted by scientist (Review Main Points). All they know is its coming! We have had solar storms in the past and we will have them in the future. We must be prepared for the events following such a storm. While some may think this could sound appealing, the grim reality is that the knowledge to live off the land has long since been lost. Only a few of us today are used to backbreaking manual labor and or walking vast distances.

Even the laborers of today are accustomed to relying on modern equipment to do the great majority of their work. Life after the storm will be forced around simple survival – foraging for food, obtaining water and finding safety and shelter (Add Reinforce Purpose). Know the potential for such a storm, do not relay on anybody but yourself for survival (Provide Closer). Works Cited Britt, Robert Roy. "Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.
