Social Darwinism - Free Essay Examples and Topic Ideas

Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection was applied to other areas of life beginning in the Progressive era. Near the end of the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era was full of intense social and political reform to improve society. To achieve such feats, people sought the use of the government to eliminate unethical or unfair practices, corruption, and other negative aspects of the Gilded Age. Commonly seen during this period were big businesses that often operated with low-wage or child factory workers and people, such as wealthy businessmen or prejudiced people, applied Darwin’s theory to other facets of life to justify their actions or thinking. As a result, Economic and Social Darwinism were formed as a direct consequence, and its effects were profound by justifying the practices of prominent tycoons, prejudiced or biased people, and others. These ideas often were hard to challenge as they were accepted a natural and intended aspect of life.
