My Study English Class Experience

When I started English course I had no idea that one simple class could change me so much. I decided to enroll in my English skills were poor and I had many problems with grammar. At the beginning of this class, I was no able to write an essay with a logically, but I wanted to learn it a lot. I want to tell about English class experience.

I am from Italy and my first language is Italian but in my country, English is pivotal to find a good job.

This is the reason I studied so much, I always did my homework and I practiced writing essays in English all the time. I did not have many expectations for myself because unfortunately I always used to underestimate myself. Now I can say that I am glad to study this subject and my English skills are improving a lot day by day. My professors in Italy used to put me down, but in this class, our professors encouraged us to do our best always.

For this reason, I would not change anything about this course. And if I have to make a deep reflection about this course I feel completely free to say that everything has been an amazing learning experience. I still remember the first day of the class. I felt like a fish out of water.

Everyone spoke English fluently. I felt so scared and I did not speak to anyone. For me, it was very difficult to share my ideas and my thoughts with other students because both my pronunciation and English skills were so bad. Thus, I decided to sit in the corner of the class and listen to our professor. The first thing that I thought about her was that she was so good and kind. The thing that I liked most about her was that she was always so patient. Sometimes I would ask her several times the same question because I was not able to understand the concept immediately and she explained it to me every time without problems. I feel I appreciated a lot how she organized the course: she gave us Grammarly homework every week and every student had to do a presentation of their homework. Consequently, the professor started to show us slides on Blackboard to make us understand the lesson of the day. This helped me a lot because I could follow her explanations and read the slides at the same time.

In class, we spoke and studied several concepts. We faced four different kinds of essays: Summary-Response essay, Literacy Narrative essay, Persuasive essay, and Reflective essay. I understood that every essay is different and for each essay, you have to pay attention to different terms. The most important lesson is that the writer has to be able to keep the attention of the readers, and this is the most difficult thing for me. Besides, being able to express yourself, your ideas and your thoughts may be so difficult, especially for me. In this class, we practiced reading a lot of documents, academic articles, newspapers, popular articles, and pages of books that our Professor showed us during our class. In this class, I learned how to organize the composition of my essay, because I always used to write a lot of information in the introduction paragraph without a logical sense. I can say that now I can cut out any irrelevant and unnecessary information and focus on what is going to directly get my point across. I feel I have largely expanded my writing skills. One of my favorite aspect of this course was that our professor organized “conferences” with us.

During these conferences, we could show her our draft before the due day. We could ask her questions, share doubts, and review issues with our essay. The feedback I received from the professor was beneficial because she directed me in the right direction. She also make us to understand when some concepts were too vague or irrelevant. She was so professional and mostly her comments were questions that were left unanswered, in this way we could understand better and be deeply focused on our essay. Our professor treats us in a considerate, kind, and polite way. I have always thought that I am sure she acted like that, so we did not feel so much pressure and we could feel comfortable in front of her. During the most recent conference with her, she gave me feedback to understand whether our writing was going in the right direction or not, and it helped a lot to understand what to improve. Sometimes she told me that my essay needed much more work, but I was glad to hear it because, thanks to this class, I also learned to accept criticism and not look at it negatively. Criticism helps you to improve your writing and help you to understand where you need to put in more effort. My feeling about the subject, theories, and core concepts have changed during the course. This class allowed me to become a more professional writer. Honestly, I can say that I feel more confident in writing essays and also I feel more confident with English in general.

Before starting this course I hated both speaking and writing in English because I felt it was so difficult for me. This course helped me to love this language. I now know what errors to look for when writing and what concepts to focus on. I believe that with the techniques I have obtained during this course and with the changes I have made, I have improved deeply as a writer. I am glad to have also the opportunity to write this essay because in this way I am figuring out all my ideas and thoughts that I feel about this course. Also, I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to take this class, I know that there are many students less lucky than me. For this reason, I can say that I appreciate this opportunity and I have enjoyed every single moment of this class. Now I can say that I feel more confident in writing essays and I am planning to continue to apply all of the information I have been learned in this class so that I can become a stronger and professional writer.
