My Plans on Successfully Completing the Nursing Program

Categories: CareerCareer Goals

Nursing is a career that gives opportunities to bring a positive impact on a person’s life. My first goal when I enter Tulsa Community College was to do nursing from the start. To broaden my education, I did classes to transfer to a university that has a bachelor’s level program in nursing. While I attended Tulsa Community College, I went for my certified nurse assisant certificate and then started working in the medical field.

My first year experience was working at a long-term nursing home with the elderly.

I then decided to further my learning expericence and relocated to a step down unit at Saint Francis hospital. While working there, I have obtained my basic life support certified (CPR) and have attended many learning classes to help with patient care. As a certified nurse technician with Saint Francis, I have observed and have been a part of this influence for five years. Working at Saint Francis has led me to seek higher education in the health care field.

After finishing my Applied Science Degree at Tulsa Community College, my plan is to further my education in a nursing program with a foundation to study at an undergraduate level and a commitment to lifelong learning. I am now eager to take my education to the next level by pursuing a degree in nursing at Langston University. After researching nursing programs in my local area, Langston University stood out because it offers a bachelor’s in nursing and has a high NCLEX rate.

The nursing profession is ever-changing and diverse.

Therefore, while I was researching colleges in the Tulsa area, I became aware it is the only historically black college in the states. Also important to me, Langston University School of Nursing is accredited by the accreditation commission for education in nursing. Working as nurse technician, I have witnessed the impact a nurse can have on a person’s life through hard work, dedication and dignity. I know that the career I have chosen is emotionally and physically demanding, and often does not get the credit it is due, but I have witnessed first-hand the tremendous influences the nurses have on the lives of the individuals who come into the hospital I work in, and I want nothing more than to join their ranks in offering excellent care. When given the opportunity to attend the nursing program, I plan to guarantee my success by devoting long hours to studying, physically and mentally preparing, joining study groups, and staying organized. Being present and on time also improves success in an academic setting. Certainly the next two years will be challenging, requiring frequent juggling of schedules and time management skills, but I have done it before, and with my clear goal in my mind, I know I can do it again with greater or equal success.

My obligation to my education is not only important, but it is paramount to be successful in the nursing program as well as in the community. I plan to ensure my success in the nursing program by continuing to seek every opportunity to learn new skills within a multicultural workplace environment as well as in the classroom. I believe that I belong to this field because ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to make a positive influence in a person life. I have always felt the need to care for everyone even though death, birth, grief, aging, pain, loss, injury, and illness. As someone who was born and raised in a lower class, small town in east Texas my heart is calling to help the vulnerable and under-privileged. It is my intention after graduating nursing school to become a nurse who faithfully serves the poor and the vulnerable.

After graduation, I plan to gain experience working in a larger hospital for a few years, and then move to a rural area where people have limited or no opportunity to get to large hospitals. My years working in the medical field have taught me accountability, compassion, and gratitude for every learning opportunity that comes my way. I am now ready to embark on a new learning path, one that will lead me to becoming an entry level professional nurse.
