I Never Had An Easy Life

In life there are lessons that you must learn to better understand yourself, and to better understand the world you live in. I am a person who loves learning and I am not afraid of making mistakes, I am not afraid to start all over, I always chase my dreams and that’s why I decided to come to the United States in 2011. I came to this country to start a new life and to learn a new language. I cannot say It was easy.

I never had an easy life. Since I was little I saw my mom struggling with money, and that gave me strength to chase something better, to keep going and never give up.

My first job in this country was babysitting. Since I didn’t speak English I had to babysit for a Brazilian family where I could speak my native language. Besides babysitting, I learned English at home and with friends. Once I had good knowledge in English I decided to take a risk and apply to work at company who was seeking for Portuguese speakers, and that became my first opportunity to learn more and gain experience.

After almost 3 years I went to Bergen Community College to get my Associates Degree in science. I worked from 6am to 3pm and had classes from 6pm to 10pm. In that period, all I had in my mind was this desire to succeed. I did not let my tiredness stop me. I knew something better would come if I kept moving forward.

In fact, with patience, I got something better. I worked as a bookkeeper on Wall Street for a French Company. They gave me the opportunity to work for them and paid for all my accounting courses. That was a big step for me. I had the opportunity to learn a lot about business and the financial world. Unfortunately, the company had to close the Office in New York. I had to search for another path, I began to look for Jobs and thankfully after months of applications, I was hired by a Brazilian Broker. I am now working on a trading floor, learning more and more about the financial world everyday.

Aside from seeking to get a Bachelors Degree and advancing my career, I want to grow more as a person and I know that Rutgers University will offer me that. I spent years only studying and working. I want stability, I want to learn more, I want to grow more and I know I need to get my bachelors in order to keep growing. knowledge is the only thing nobody can ever take away from me. I want the opportunity to obtain my Bachelors from Rutgers University and show the world what I am capable of.
