What is herd mentality? Merriam-Webster defines it as "the tendency of the people in a group to think and behave in ways that conform with others in the group rather than as individuals". This phenomenon is prevalent in many aspects of society, but it is especially prominent in high schools. The pressure to conform and fit in can have a significant impact on students' mental health and well-being.
The act of "masking" one's true self in order to fit in with a particular group is not a new concept.
Many students, like the friend mentioned earlier who struggled to wear a pair of jeans to school, experience this pressure on a daily basis.
The fear of judgement from peers can lead students to make choices that are not true to themselves, ultimately affecting their self-esteem and mental health.
In a survey conducted among my peers, 96% admitted to altering their clothing choices due to fear of judgement from others. This constant pressure to conform can have detrimental effects on students' mental health.
According to the survey, 72% of students at Westlake feel that the pressure to fit in negatively impacts their mental well-being.
Studies have shown that anxiety and depression are major concerns among teenagers, with 70% of teens identifying these issues as prevalent among their peers.
It is clear that the high expectations and pressure to conform at Westlake contribute to the mental health challenges faced by students. The lack of individuality and the fear of not being accepted can exacerbate existing mental health issues and lead to increased anxiety and depression among students.
While there are students who have embraced their true selves and express their individuality at Westlake, even they have likely faced scrutiny and judgement at some point.
It is important for students to support each other's differences and celebrate individuality rather than criticize those who do not conform to societal norms.
High school is a formative period in a person's life, but it is essential to remember that it is only a small part of one's journey.
Graduation provides an opportunity for students to reinvent themselves and embrace their true identities without the constraints of societal expectations.
One peer who participated in the survey aptly summarized the situation by stating, "I often feel like many students feel insecure to express themselves. My sister said that after she left high school, she noticed so many of her peers changed their style and began to truly express themselves differently than they did in high school." This highlights the potential for growth and self-discovery beyond the confines of high school.
In conclusion, the pressure to conform and fit in at Westlake can have a significant impact on students' mental health. It is essential for students to support each other's individuality and create a more inclusive and accepting environment. Graduation marks a new beginning for students to embrace their true selves and break free from the constraints of societal expectations. By fostering a culture of acceptance and celebrating diversity, students can create a more positive and supportive community for all.
