Jonathan Edward a savvy theologian created and preached his infamous sermon that made people fear the power of God, his harsh delivery in theme, language, and imagery, to support his perspective. ‘Sinner’s in the Hands of an Angry God ‘was made to convince audience members the change their lives and get on the right track with God.
He began his sermon with Deuteronomy 32:35 it states,” Their feet shall slide at due time” (Edwards 80). He expressed how the people walking down the path of sin, will slip and fall down to hell if God decides so. His hostile imagery gives the audience a three-dimensional vision of the consequences of living a life of sin. The terrifying imagery was an amazingly bold way to convince listeners to convert. Edward said, “God is there always holding you, until he decides when it is time for you to burn in the pits of hell”.
(Edwards) God is providing for you, but he also the judge of your fate. Do not abuse his love for you by continuing to do foolish sinful things, your promise to Heaven can become a permanent stay in hell.
His appalling language is pivotal, Edward’s tone is aggressive and loud. The sermon he stresses how the weakness can affect your body “Heavy as lead” (Edwards 89) Ironic metaphor talks about the weight of the lead is heavy but not and heavy as the human body, so a body is as heavy as lead is very solid.
In addition to insinuating to the evil spirit that larks and harass the living by possessing their body.
Edward said phrases like,’ The justice of God’s wrath, and the chance for redemption” (Edwards 88) set the theme of the sermon. He explained how if the audience member would repent for their sins, they will have the opportunity to live in paradise. Paradise in Heaven’s as it is described as a great place compared to the description of Hell. The theme stood-out because Edward tells his audience that God‘s decision to condemn humans to damnation is justifiable. He warns God’s punish wicked people by sending them to Hell.
