In Ginott's Model he states that "students learn how teachers respond to problems. Therefore, teachers who are self-disciplined are able to show their students how to deal with problem situations." However, although there is some truth to this statement the learner is outside the school more than he or she is inside. The learner may be influenced more with what is going on outside the learning environment. For example, in a Pupil Referral Unit I worked at, the learners where more influenced by their peers outside of the school than they were by the teachers inside.
Some of the learners where involved in gangs longer than they had been at the school itself. So, finding strategies to breakdown the influence of the learner's gang affiliation was difficult.
The Love and Logic Model compares and contrasts it model with teaching and parenting styles. In my opinion, if a theory that does not consider the parent or the home life then that theory needs more developing.
Often at times, a learner places the same value on education as their parents do. At the same Pupil Referral Unit, I wanted to see my learners achieve higher levels. So, in my spare time I wrote a "Newsletter" of sorts to the parents stating what the learners were taught that day in ACE and how to aid their child in his or her education. There was an open invitation for the parent(s) to work with me for their child to succeed. My work email was given if parents needed more information.
None of the parents independently replied to the "Newsletter" so I asked a few parents if they received it. They said "yes" and it was "very good" but not one of the parents worked with me personally to help their child succeed academically. In my opinion, in most cases, the respect for the inclusive learning environment starts at home.
Nonetheless, the Love and Logic Model is the preferred model my practice or work would use to help in the creation of a safe and inclusive learning environment. Although, all models have approaches I would use, I particularly like the "Consultants" aspect of the model. Where Consultants provide guidance and consultant services for students. These individuals (or teachers) provide messages of self-worth and strength. others. I would apply these aspects to my practice, building a learner's sense of self-worth and strength I believe is crucial in relation to behavior management in the classroom because it encourages learner to learn more, to participate more and encourage This I saw when I was facilitating a "Being" workshop one of the learners did really well and was congratulated by her peers and myself and her disposition changed throughout the workshop. She was more cooperative and encouraged the other learners to do the same.
