From August 2017 to July 2018 I have had the privilege of working as a mini-pupil at the law chamber of Barrister Nazmul Karim, a renowned senior advocate of The Supreme Court of Bangladesh. In the beginning, I was tasked to observe the activities of the chamber and take notes of my observations which included checking daily case lists and taking notes of meetings with clients.
While in the chamber I have gathered knowledge and experience about the practical applications of law in real life cases.
During my time in the chamber, I learned about procedural law and Lawyer's code of conduct. I also focused on mastering typical advocacy skills such as taking statements of witnesses, drafting litigation documents etc. After a few months of working there, my supervisor instructed me to conduct legal research on 'Civil Procedure' and this introduced me to various legal databases i.e. LexisNexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg etc. This has ultimately enhanced my skill to navigate to these sources and retrieve relevant legislation, cases, law journals.
On several occasions, I was also taken to the court where I observed courtroom procedures, Trials, hearings which enabled me to have an experience of how Barristers advocate in court.
It is my dream since childhood to become a lawyer. As I grew up and studied LLB I soon found out about the level of skills and efficiency demanded by employers in the legal field. Undertaking the BPTC will enable me to pursue a dynamic career in the legal profession.
The contents of BPTC is designed in a way which converges academic & practical experience of how the law is administered, which will enhance my ability to manage cases, improve oral & communication skills, drafting, legal research and other typical advocacy skills. I believe that this training will bestow me with all necessary knowledge and skills demanded by modern-day legal firms where more priority is given to graduates possessing the skills learned from BPTC.
During my time at the pupillage, my seniors and my fellow associates often praised me for my skill of effectively persuading clients on legal matters. I have worked closely with various pupil across my pupillage's other practice areas to help senior associates to fork out compendious advice to clients. I have had the privilege of successfully working with a diverse array of both local and foreign clients which involved dealing with them in different dialects. This augmented my speaking abilities. On several occasions, while working with foreign clients I have had the opportunity to directly interact with miscellaneous sponsors and sophisticated investors. I was often sent to Bangladesh Investment Development Authority to track the progress of our client's applications regarding foreign investments which allowed me to interact with high profile government officials with whom I discussed our client's applications and took advice on how to proceed further. My effort helped me to build longstanding relationships with clients and senior associates from other law firms which will keep growing with my legal career.
Besides the aforementioned activities, I participated in various debates. I was a member of Cambridge Business and Law Academy Debating club. I once debated on the topic "Should workers be allowed to go on strike?" and with the help of my debating team, we were successful in winning the debate. As a member of the debating club, I always maintained good relations with other club members and inter-colligate members and this increased my communication skills.
I have also been very efficient in organizing a few cultural events and workshops. And in order to make those happen, I often visited different corporate houses and met with top officials to persuade them to sponsor those events. These activities further boosted my ability to pursue in support of my aspirations.
From January 2017 till date I am working as a law teacher for 'A levels' students at Penny Bee Solution, which is a well-reputed teaching academy and study consultancy firm where we also assist young students on their overseas study applications. As a result, I regularly deal with students of a different caliber. Teaching students and helping them with their University applications deeply enhanced my ability to concisely process and analyze huge volume of written information on a daily basis. Tutoring students also helped me to identify their dilemmas so I always developed different styles of lectures so they can come up with solutions of their own difficulties. Delivering lectures helped me to overcome my hesitancy to speak before audiences.
From January 2015 to December 2016 I have also worked as a member of the marketing team for Sourov Knitwear Limited, a garment manufacturing Company. There my duties were to maintain communication with foreign buyers from all over the world and convince them to work with us. I was also tasked to maintain all social media accounts of the company. These work experiences have made great contributions to my verbal & written communicational capabilities which I believe will be very helpful throughout my legal career.
I also work as a Volunteer for a local group named "Rights for all women", where we give pro bono advice to women on their human rights. Working as a volunteer I have travelled to many rural areas in my country in order to make women aware of rights where human rights is a farce concept when it comes to women. One of our notable work was when we stopped marriage of a 15 year old girl, who was forced to marry a man thrice her age. And in doing so I have attended a mediation and have successfully convinced the mediator to stop the marriage.
As a result of working on different jobs at the same time I have learned how to manage and utilize my time. This has also made me commercially aware which is very important in the legal field.
