Why literacy is important in life

The key element in leading a life which is successful is literacy. Literacy is important in all levels of employment. For people who literacy is not available to, different reasons push them to become literate. Literacy is a social unifier.

A person is more effective in completing daily tasks, more efficient in their work, and is considered to be a much more powerful person amongst their peers when literate. Doors open much more easily for people who are literate. For example, who is going to hire an individual who can not even properly fill out a job application? It does not shy nice on the job you are applying for.

In some job fields it is easier to see why you would need to be literate, such as being a reporter for a newspaper. You would obviously need to know how to read and write above the level of most others to become successful. Also a doctor would need literacy to get through years of college to become even adequate in his area.

In a position such as a worker in a phosphate plant you may not be able to see why you would need literacy to do your job, but I have an argument for that. Say you are trying to operate a new piece of machinery and there is no one around to read the manual for you. In this situation, you are going to be unsuccessful in completing your simple job description.

For people whom literacy is not valued, passion is a big factor for them to search it out.

Take Frederick Douglas; was just another slave on the plantation, but the difference between him and the other slaves was that he had passion. Douglas had a passion to learn the written word because he knew what literacy meant for an African American slave, freedom. Freedom – a right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference. That concept was absolutely unheard of for a slave in those days. Douglas understood what freedom would mean for him and he was not afraid to take the steps to become literate to achieve that goal.

Being literate is about having enough self-respect to want to actually learn. The written word is the oldest form of self expression. That recognition alone is normally enough for one person to want to learn how to read and/or write. It is in human nature to want to be better than the next person, to excel at something better than everyone else. I remember my first day of kindergarten and how proud I was that I already knew the alphabet and could write it also. I remember the pride I felt when I stood in front of my class and showed them my little chalk board with the alphabet written on it. Pride is what pushed me to learn. I was proud that I could go home with a gold star for knowing my alphabet before the rest of my class.

Reading and writing are not the only ways that people are rated on their literacy. It is also the ability to speak and solve problems proficiently. A huge factor for understanding language is the communication it allows between people. Newspapers, the internet, and magazines all open up different windows of opportunity for people to obtain varying levels of literacy.

Those people who choose to take advantage of the opportunities given to achieve literacy, will be rewarded with success and a better understanding of life. Being literate is a reward in itself for the feeling it gives you to go through life with a little more ease. Not having to rely on others to read simple instructions or when driving down the street not wondering what it was that a sign said makes life smoother.

Literacy is a key element for expressing your thoughts, emotions, impressions, and so forth. If you are able to just pop out what you would like to say instead of having to stumble to think of what words to use, life will run smoother for you and everyone you encounter. Literacy is a very valuable tool and a must for each person in life.
