Why Is Biodiversity Important?

Life on earth encompasses a wide variety of species and ecosystems, each of which have their own unique characteristics and defining characteristics. This uniqueness and individuality within systems brings about biodiversity. Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems (What is Biodiversity?). Biodiversity gives rise to complex ecosystems, as well as the organisms that interact within the ecosystem. The diverse nature of environments around us allows ecosystems to reach their greatest potential and maximize prosperity.

There are various working parts of an ecosystem that come together to form a balanced environment.

Every component of an ecosystem is essential to creating biodiversity, including plants, animals, and microorganisms (Why Is Biodiversity Important? Who Cares?).

Species within ecosystems rely on each other as they hold different niches with different purposes. Some of these purposes include, but are not limited to, pollination, climate regulation and pest regulation (What is Biodiversity?). Species depend on one another to carry out these crucial responsibilities, making biodiversity especially valuable.

Without the genetic variation found between species, niches would not be individualized, resulting in an ecological imbalance. Genetic variation is accomplished through natural selection which supports diversity within ecosystems.

As organisms coexist within environments, they benefit from each other’s roles. This enables ecosystems to thrive and provide maximum benefits. Every species plays an equally integral role in maintaining stability, no matter it’s size. These strong ecosystems make them less susceptible to destruction and provide greater chances for survival. Humans also benefit greatly from biodiversity, including protection of water resources, food resources, and education opportunities (Why Is Biodiversity Important? Who Cares?).Unfortunately, biodiversity currently faces many threats. This is due to an increase in human population and ecosystem changes. One major threat to biodiversity is habitat destruction resulting from deforestation. The Amazon is home to an immense number of species, all of which are facing major threats. The rate of deforestation in the Amazon is increasing as industries push to industrialize the land. As a result, the Amazon is experiencing record-high forest fires. This is a major threat to the biodiversity within the rainforest and its ecosystems.

Without a suitable habitat, animals cannot flourish or even survive in the environment. As this jeopardizes the biodiversity of the ecosystem, it therefore endangers the lives of the species within the rainforest. If animals are unable to carry out their environmental functions, the ecosystem is at stake. There will be a loss of balance, an endangerment of species, and certainly a threat to biodiversity (Amazon Deforestation).Diversity among environments is what allows species to thrive on Earth. This is due to the distribution of functions and niches throughout ecosystems. One aspect of an ecosystem will not reach its potential without the rest of the ecosystem. Biodiversity encourages a synchrony of responsibilities and functions between organisms, allowing each species to benefit and thrive. Biodiversity has enabled evolution to prosper among species to allow for better survival.
