Since a young age, I always knew I wanted to become a veterinarian. I always had a love for animals, and having pets during my childhood just added to it. A veterinarian is a person that has compassion for animals, perseveres through school, and treats injured animals.
To begin with, veterinarians have to have compassion for all animals. Dr. Yoko Haneda states, “One of the most important skills veterinarians must have is a passion for all types of animals.” Haneda’s point is that you can’t just want to work with certain animals.
As a veterinarian, you will have to work with a variety of different types. According to Veterinary Schools, “A great veterinarian is passionate about animals and committed to providing them the best care, whether it’s farm, wild, or pet animals.” (“Top 10 Qualities of a Great Veterinarian,” 1). By saying this, Veterinary Schools explains that people have to be passionate about all animals because they will have to provide the best care to them.
In other words, if you have a mindset that you don’t want to work with a certain animal, you won’t give your fullest to provide the best you can for them. This is why it is important to know that being a veterinarian means having compassion for animals.
Secondly, as a veterinarian, you have to be able to persevere through school. Dr. Haneda says, “It was very difficult, eight years of school altogether. Pre-vet and getting into vet school was one of the hardest things, but if you have the right mindset it will make everything easier.” By saying this, Dr.
Haneda explains how tough veterinary school can be. However, if you have your goals set, you will be just fine. According to Jeffrey Joyner, “The path to becoming a veterinarian is not a short one. At minimum, veterinarians must obtain doctoral degrees from accredited schools of veterinary medicine.” (Joyner, 1). In making this comment, Joyner explains that it is not an easy path because veterinarians need at least a doctoral degree, which is eight years of school.
Last and most importantly, a veterinarian is a person who treats injured animals. Besides treating animals, veterinarians also do other things. According to Sokanu, “A veterinarian is a medical professional who protects the health and well-being of both animals and people. They diagnose and control animal diseases and treat sick and injured animals by using medical equipment such as stethoscopes, surgical instruments, and diagnostic equipment, including radiographic and ultrasound equipment. They also advise owners on proper care of their pets and livestock.” (“Becoming a Veterinarian,” 2). This supports the fact that veterinarians treat injured animals because it explains how and what they do to help sick animals. It also shows that veterinarians don’t only help and care for animals, but for their owners, as well. They inform owners about their pets in the most empathetic way possible.
All in all, we can conclude that veterinarians value hard work and dedication. Though it consists of many years of school, veterinary careers are very fulfilling. As a veterinarian, you have to have compassion for animals, persevere through school, and treat injured animals.
