A veterinarian is simply a doctor who works with animals instead of humans. Veterinarians give medicine and suggestions to help prevent ailments, vets also diagnose animals with different ailments, and treat diseases and health issues in animals. Veterinarians are very well educated on animal health and well-being. You can find veterinarians working at a wide abundance of places including small animal clinics that don’t perform many surgeries, emergency hospitals for serious injuries or conditions, and specialty animal hospitals. They can also be found at college universities, research facilities, pet food manufacturing companies, drug manufacturing companies, and different government organizations.
How do veterinarians contribute to society?
A typical day for a veterinarian can start anywhere from 7 to 9:00 AM and end anywhere from 6-8:00 PM depending on the day. Depending on the veterinarian’s practice of the day, that particular day may be completely or partially blocked off for surgeries and other procedures, such as neuters, declawing, or biopsies. The rest of the time is spent attending appointments.

A typical appointment can last anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on what type of appointment it is. During these appointments, the animal is examined to check if it is in good health. Annual checkups take much shorter than emergency appointments/sickness appointments, as in the annual checkups the Veterinarian targets a very broad array of things to check, while emergency appointments/sickness appointments target a more specific target that requires testing. Typically during appointments, the veterinary technician will collect all the history and vitals of the animal, before passing on the information to the veterinarian who will read it over before evaluating the animal.
After the information is read over by the veterinarian, the veterinarian performs a wellness examination where the Veterinarian may ask the owner questions about their pet’s diet, exercise, thirst, breathing, behavior, habits, bowel movements, urination, lifestyle, and general health. Then the veterinarian will move into performing a physical examination and comes up with an evaluation where he/she will make recommendations to help prevent or treat ailments of the animal. The recommendations can include more exercise, a better diet, or getting flea deterrent medicine.
Veterinarians work with a wide range of animals spanning from small to large. Depending on the size of the Veterinary office, this can affect the types of animals they accept to treat. Most vets work with smaller animals such as dogs, cats, rodents, lizards, birds, snakes, and turtles. But some vets also work with larger animals such as sheep, cows, and horses. For the larger animals, the veterinarian typically has to drive out to the ranch or stables the animals are housed.
One procedure that is commonly done by veterinarians is castration. Castration is the process of removing the testicles of a male animal or rendering the testicles unusable for reproduction. Dogs can be castrated anytime after 8 weeks of age. Most are castrated as early as possible, although some are castrated when they reach puberty which is roughly 6 months.
The whole castration process begins with giving the dog anesthesia. The next step involves shaving the whole scrotum area to prevent hair/fur from getting in the way of the incision and procedure. The third step involves creating an incision just in front of the scrotum and pushing both testicles up through the incision. The next step is to clamp the vas deferens, pampiniform plexus, cremaster muscle, and arterial supply. The fifth step involves using a dissolvable suture to perform an internal ligation around the vessels, vas deferens, and thin cremaster muscle. Next, a needle is used to thread the suture between the vas deferens and vessels. The suture is then wrapped around everything to secure the knot. The 7th step is to close the skin around the incision using the same dissolvable suture that was used to ligate the testicles. The second to last step is applying surgical glue to the skin edges to keep it closed and to provide comfort, minimal bleeding, and any seepage from the wound. The last step is taking the dog off anesthesia and waiting for it to wake up. The surgery is now over.
To become a Veterinarian, one must undergo 3-5 years of college and obtain a bachelor’s degree. Then after those years are completed, veterinary school is required which is typically 4 years. After all, this is completed, the person becoming the vet typically does internships with other Veterinarians to further expand their experience and resumes. Veterinarians’ salaries differ depending on the size of the clinic and the veterinarian’s position. Veterinarians’ salaries typically range between $58.5k-$112k a year, although this is an average and can be a lot higher depending on the amount of experience the Veterinarian has.
In a veterinary office, there are many different types of roles to contribute to a well-functioning business. Receptionists are the first people you will be greeted by as you walk in. Receptionists greet customers, answer phone calls, answer questions, process customers’ paperwork, handle payments, schedule appointments, and handle mail and emails. Then there’s the kennel assistant which cares for the kennels and the animals in them in the back. Kennel assistants keep the kennels clean for the animals, walk and feed the animals, and report the animal’s condition to the veterinarian and or owner. Then there’s the veterinarian that does most of the interaction with the animals. Veterinarians care for the health of animals, diagnose ailments in animals, treat animals' ailments, and research different medical conditions and diseases involving animals. Next, there’s the clinic manager that monitors the clinic. Clinic managers make sure things run smoothly in the office and provide business management services so the vets can focus on the animals and not run an establishment. Last but not least there are the Veterinary technicians. Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians by doing stuff like cleaning and wrapping wounds, checking vital statistics during examinations, collecting animal samples, and administering medication. Veterinary technicians also may perform an initial evaluation of the animal’s condition, update patient files, or communicate with pet owners. That's how do veterinarians contribute to society.
Finally, veterinarians are very important to the animal world and the human world as well. This is proven to be true because Veterinarians help treat and prevent animals from getting diseases. Some diseases can be transmittable to humans such as rabies. Without Veterinarians being able to treat animals and more specifically pets, the well-being of the human population and animal population would be put at risk. That is why Veterinarians are important.
