Under The Eye Of The Clock Integrity and Perseverance

Categories: Plot

In Christopher Nolan’s “Under the Eye of the Clock '', Nolan uses various devices to develop the central idea that one may overcome struggles with perseverance.

“Under the Eye of the Clock” is about a young boy, named Joseph, who struggles from paralysis. Throughout the text, he shows integrity and perseverance by not letting this disability hold him back from furthering his crave to learn how to type and functioning as a “regular” human. Nolan uses similes and personification to develop the central idea of the text.

Christopher Nolan uses similes to develop the central idea that one may overcome struggles with perseverance. Nolan states “Two great legs I have, but put body weight on them and they collapse like a house of cards.” He uses this simile to symbolize how weak Joseph's legs are and how lackluster they are in supporting him to a deck/house of cards that has collapsed. Based off of this quote, readers may infer that Joseph’s legs are so weak that the attempt to even try to get up always ends in failure and him falling right back down.

The use of a simile affects the true meaning of the central idea by providing firsthand how he tries to stand on his own but he constantly collapses which leads to his persistent action of trying to stand.

Christopher Nolan uses similes to develop the central idea that one may overcome struggles with perseverance. Nolan states “the boy blowing like a whale from the huge effort of trying to to discipline his bedamned body.” Nolan uses the simile in this sense to compare the efforts trying to coordinate his body to a whale trying to blow water from their blowholes.

Readers may infer that despite the attempts to train his body to do what he wants, Joseph continues to try to not only stand but to type as well. The simile in this case shows that his perseverance doesn’t allow him to give up on his body performing “normally” as Nolan compares the body function to a whale struggling to blow water from their blowholes.

Christopher Nolan uses personification to develop the central idea that one may overcome struggles with perseverance. Nolan states “ my smile which can be most natural can sometimes freeze/ great spasms gripped him rigid and sent his simple nod into a farcacial effort which ran to each and every other limb.” The first quote shows the difficulty Joseph has attempting to control his own body while the second quote illustrates an exaggeration. Readers may infer based off of these quotes that the more Joseph tried to move his limbs, the more free they became. The use of personification helps prove the central idea by allowing Nolan to prove a point that perseverance outweighs setback in a unique way.
