The Vaccination Debate: An Argumentative Essay on Balancing Collective Health and Individual Beliefs

Categories: VaccinationVaccines

“Imagine the action of a vaccine not just in terms of how it affects a single body, but also in terms of how it affects the collective body of a community.” — Eula Biss. Vaccines used to be something not everybody had access to, but now that the majority of the population do they are refusing to use them because they are dangerous and not effective. This leads to many people becoming ill and dying. On the other hand, vaccines also save people's lives and are very effective.

Chances of Getting Sick

According to a Newsela article written by Tim Wendel and Julie Gunlock unvaccinated kids are 6.5 times more likely to be hospitalized with pneumonia, 23 times more likely to get whooping cough, and 9 times more likely to get chickenpox than vaccinated kids. All vaccine-preventable diseases. This just proves that vaccines work, of course, you can still get sick when you are vaccinated but the chances of getting it and it being so dangerous are lower.

When you are unvaccinated and get sick, you can get a worse illness than vaccinated kids. Meaning that you might feel worse, it might affect you worse, or it lasts longer. Vaccines have saved many people and will continue to do so especially with medical advances. But if people keep refusing them then the illness and death rate due to not vaccinating will continue to rise, and we could start a new epidemic.

The Harm In Not Vaccinating

There are numerous reasons as to why we should vaccinate, and not doing so can be harmful.

According to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that vaccines are the #1 way to stop the spread of diseases. Spreading diseases can be harmful and on occasion even cause a world whipping epidemic. We saw this in the 1300s with the black plague, again in 1918 when the flu spread, both killing millions of people. Of course, these are not the only epidemics that have ever occurred but they are big ones. If you don’t vaccinate you are 9 times more likely to be put in the hospital for vaccine-preventable diseases. This means you cannot go to work, not get money, use all money on hospital bills, go into debt, house gets taken away, you become homeless. Just because you were too stubborn to vaccinate. Vaccination is much more vital than you think and should be required for all. But why do people not vaccinate? The World Health Organization and many other reputable sites say that the main reason people don’t vaccinate is that ‘they rather be safe than sorry’ because they have read all the fake news articles saying vaccines cause autism or that they are dangerous.

A lot of people believe that vaccination is a great advancement in medical science, but in reality, vaccines are dangerous and not effective. According to the CDC, each vaccine carries a risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction, which happens to about 1 in every million kids. The National Vaccine Information Center states that vaccines may be linked to learning disabilities such as asthma, autism, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and others. It is scary that something that is made to help people can end up harming them in such ways. Vaccines work mostly to prevent diseases that have been whipped out completely, so what's the point in getting vaccinated for those? Even though there are very few facts supporting these claims, and most ‘evidence’ has been debunked people continue to believe vaccines cause harm. Various respected scientists, doctors, and government officials have stated the facts, that vaccines are perfectly safe but people continue to believe what they want.

Vaccines are safe and effective, they save millions of lives each year. People need to start vaccinating their kids to keep a healthy happy world on its feet. Suck it up buttercup and vaccinate your kids instead of waiting for them to die.
