The Necklace' By Guy De Maupassant: Tragedy Of Madame Loisel

Things aren’t always what they seem, and people aren’t always what they appear to be. Individuals pretend to live a life that they don’t have to fit in with those they aspire to be like. Those individuals tend to become blinded and forget the reality of their own lives. They want to be like other individuals and want to have what others have without knowing the reality of others lives but think they know based off what they see.

People often make judgments based merely on opinion without having any knowledge. In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, Madame Mathilde Loisel tends to have a battle between appearance and reality. She forgets the reality of her life, tries to fit in with ‘high society’, and doesn’t appreciate the reality of her own life.

Madame Loisel’s wealth and appearance at the party is in all reality, an illusion that easily tricks those individuals who attended the party.

In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, it states, “Madame Loisel was a success. She was prettier than all the other woman, elegant, gracious, smiling, and full of joy. All the men stared at her, asked her name, tried to be introduced.” Madame Loisel couldn’t afford the nice things that she was wearing at the party; she borrowed the necklace and used her husband’s money to buy a dress for the party but those at the party was unaware of that. This shows that looks can be deceiving.

A person can appear to have all the money in the world but in all reality, can be the poorest person alive. Individuals are easily fooled by what they see on the outside. Don’t let what you see on the outside fool you because what’s on the inside is often a different story and isn’t always the true reality.

Madame Loisel spent most of her time pretending to live a lifestyle she didn’t really have and tried her best to be like those who were considered to be high class without knowing their reality. In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, it states, “‘Oh, my poor Mathilde! Mine was an imitation! It was worth five hundred francs at most!’” Madame Frostier was considered wealthy and appeared to have all the luxurious things that Madame Lionel wished to have but had a fake diamond necklace. This also shows that looks can be deceiving. Even those who are considered or appear to be rich, pretend to be wealthier than they actually are. You don’t know the true reality of others lives so it’s best to be yourself, your authentic self. If Madame Lionel was aware that the necklace was fake, she wouldn’t have worn it but she did because it appeared to be real and she was mesmerized by it. There is always more to the story than what you see, don’t be so quick to make judgements based on the five percent you’re shown.

Madame Loisel believed that she was living in poverty when in all reality, she wasn’t. In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, it states, “From then on, Madame Loisel knew the horrible life of the very poor. But she played her part heroically. The dreadful debt must be paid. She would pay it. They dismissed their maid; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof.” You don’t know what things are like until you actually go through it. If Madame Loisel didn’t compare her life to those around her who were considered wealthy and appreciated the things she had in the reality of her life, she wouldn’t have been in the predicament she was in. Remain humble and appreciate the little things you have and are given because it can all be taken from you within a split second.

Appearance can be a tough battle with reality. Individuals often get caught up with their appearance which tends to make them forget about their reality. People get caught up with their appearance because they care about what others think of them. They also see what others have and want it so they do everything in their power to have it or pretend to have it. Madame Loisel wanted to live a luxurious life so bad that it led her to wasting ten years of her life for no reason. Be yourself, be appreciative for what you have, and live the reality of your own life, not others.
