“The Necklace” is a short story by Guy de Maupassant. It was first published in 1884 in the French newspaper Le Gaulois. The story tells the tale of Mathilde Loisel, a woman of modest means who dreams of a life of luxury. When she is given the opportunity to attend a ball, she borrows a necklace from her wealthy friend, only to lose it. The loss of the necklace destroys Mathilde’s life, as she is forced to spend the next ten years working to pay off the debt. “The Necklace” is a cautionary tale about the dangers of greed and the power of appearances.
