The Untouchables was a photography piece done by Cuban artist Erik Ravelo. Ravelo is known for putting our controversial pieces. Even though a lot of people were angered by The Untouchables, he claims that that was not his goal. His intention was to raise awareness to what was happening in the world around us but many people were ignoring. Even though the piece was meant to raise awareness and the children were not fully nude or meant to look sexual, many people still had many concerns and issues with the pieces.

The pictures debuted onto facebook on June of 2015, the pictures went viral quickly but were shortly taken off and banned from facebook. In the pictures all the children’s faces were blurred in order to keep their identities hidden. The children were also in the crucifix position on an adults back. The overall meaning of the positioning was to show how a child’s innocence was being taken by many adults these days.

The main concern with the photos was that they were overall very disturbing. Also, it showcased issues that many people did not want to accept but also did not like being accused of ignoring these issues. Some people had religious issues with it or ethical concerns while some were even going as far as calling it child porn.

Each of the seven images has a powerful meaning behind it. The first one is a young boy on the back of a Vatican priest, this image was to show the problem with pedophilia within the Vatican churches.

The third photo is a young muslim girl on the back of a soldier to represent the death of children in the Syrian war. Photo number four is a young boy on the back of a surgeon. This is meant to represent the trafficking of organs on the black market where most of the victims are children from poor countries sold for their organs. The fifth photo is a direct hit at the US and it's free weapon policy by showcasing a young school girl on the back of a shooter. The sixth photo has a young obese boy on the back of fast food mascot, Ronald McDonald, this is to show the issue with obesity and blaming fast food chains at the same time.

The last photo shows a young boy on the back of a hazmat person in order to show a potential threat with nuclear power and child abuse in Japan. Ravelo’s photos showcase many issues that our societies and governments need to work harder to put a stop to. The life of a child is to often ruined and taken away. Children are meant to represent innocence but instead are being forced to grow up way too soon because of the tragic things that are forced upon the. I think that these photos show a very powerful message and brings up many issues that are far to often overlooked.
