A metanarrative is a story that gives textual meaning and purpose to all. The metanarrative provides the “complete story or big picture” of the writing and encompasses the smaller themes that are associated with the grand theme. A metanarrative is like an assembly line manufacturer, to produce the final product their must be a collected amount of smaller jobs performed to be successful in the end goal. In a metanarrative the collection of the small themes must be obtained to produce the grand overall theme.
The concept provides meaning to life and the events that have led up and taken place prior to the event. In speaking about the Biblical metanarrative, the Bible clearly shows the divine will of God, his purpose for our lives, the timetable of events, along with the fulfillment of his prophecies. In the Bible there are many small themes or storylines that have occurred along with others that are still yet to be. These events are all part of the grand theme of God’s intent and desire for our lives.

God has provided the direction for us all even when we feel unworthy and have fallen short from his graces, he offers the way for restoration for our souls.
Those who come to know Christ recognize that his grand narrative – this overarching story of redemption – gives meaning and purpose to the world, to history, to all of life, and to everyone (Got questions, 2016). There are innumerable metanarrative accounts the Bible gives us regarding our views of God.
God first made his presence known from the very beginning with the creation of all the earth, animals, and mankind. His creation was a true reflection of his perfection and peace and delivers his true intention for all to flourish. God’s plan was immaculate from the very beginning, he cultivated the Garden of Eden and tasked both Adam and Eve with the responsibility of caring for it. God’s desire was to fill the Earth with his glory through his divine image. God provided consequences if his direction for our lives were not followed, but also provided a way of repentance if one fell short of what was expected. God’s grace is enough that he provides for each of us, he declares his desire for us to be known thru his promise of eternal salvation. God is eternal and has full empowerment over all the Earth and creation. God continues and remains faithful to his people even when they fall into despair and judgment. The Biblical metanarrative story reveals God’s will thru his son Jesus. He sent his only begotten son to bear the sins of all. God, thru his divine love for us provided a path of redemption thru this sacrifice and atonement of his son Jesus thru the death and resurrection.
The entire Bible presents a God missional activity, from his purposeful, goal-oriented act of Creation to the completion of his mission through the redemption of all creation in the heavens and new earth, and the creation of a new humanity in Christ, redeemed from every nation on earth through the blood of the cross (Christianity today, n.d.). The biblical metanarrative of God himself is revealed from Genesis in the creation and the first fall through Revelation in the redemption and restoration. When I first think about the view of my personal identity, my first thought is how I was first defined by my upbringing, my inheritance from my parents, their vocation, and religious views. The metanarrative view of my identity is extremely clear after reading and knowing the purpose that God has for my life. We are given the free will to decide our identity and path to follow. Not only do we know God thru his son Jesus Christ, but we know ourselves only by Jesus Christ and what he did on the cross. My personal identity reflects my relationship with my Lord and Savior. “Christian selfhood is not defined in terms of who we are in and of ourselves. It’s defined in terms of what God does to us, the relationship he creates with us, and the destiny he appoints for us. God made us who we are, so we can make known who he is. Our identity is for the sake of making known his identity.” (Desiring God, 2019). God desires us to feel good about ourselves and to be confident in who we are as a child of the Kingdom. I sometimes feel so unworthy of him, that I truly don’t deserve all that I have. This is just a lie of the devil, he purposely is working to feed these lies to Christians so that their walk with God will be non-existent. My identity in Christ is more pronounced as I continue to get into his word and he reveals to me how much he truly loves me and wants for my life. Christ’ joy is our joy, his peace is our peace, and his strength is our strength. God has always promised to never put more on us than we can bear. I believe thru many of the struggles and victories that I have faced in my life, it has helped to build who I am and gave me a greater purpose not just for myself but thru him. Gaining a new identity in Christ changes the way we fully operate as individuals. Material things and longings of the flesh are not a priority once you are covered by the blood, I now seek to honor God and to do all things that will be pleasing to him.
When I gave my life to God, I gave all my transgressions, my hurts, my worries, my everything to him. I no longer fear what the future may bring because with God by my side I can move mountains. My established identity gives me direct access to my Heavenly Father, who is always there and ready to meet my every need.. The ideal of family is extremely important in the Bible. When God created man and woman in the beginning their direction was to be fruitful and increase in number. Two of the commandments are about family, honoring thy father and mother and not committing adultery, which protects the sanctity of the marriage vows. The comparisons are like no other, we are born into a physical and biological family, but we are then “born again” into our spiritual family and covered by his blood. We gain our brothers and sisters in Christ and God is our Heavenly Father. My family unit is very important to me, we lean upon each other in trying times, rejoice with each other in happy times, encourage each other when uplifting is needed, love each other unconditionally just as Christ loves us. Our family is to be nurtured and protected from the force of evil and wrongdoing. I have found myself many times covering my loved ones with prayer when I needed to stand in the gap for them and they have also done this for me. This is what the family identity is truly about and what God intended it to be. Our spiritual family or church family is where we as a group of believers get together and lift God’s name up and praise him for all that he does. We encourage and stand in the gap for those that are truly in need, stand in for those that are oppressed, sick in their body, or perhaps not where they should be in their spiritual walk. With God at the center of one’s marriage, the marriage shall surely prosper and be good. God must always be first in one’s life, family second, and then all other should follow. God’s full story in the Bible teaches each of us on the sanctity of marriage and how we are to teach and bring up our sons and daughters in his word. I do not believe vocation is self-chosen, I truly believe it is a calling and is ordained by our Lord and Savior. I am a firm believer that most all things happen for a reason and that God knew what mountains had to be crossed and valleys we had to go thru to get to our predestined location in life. We do not choose numerous things in our life:, we did not choose who our parents are, who our siblings will be, we did not even choose who our soul mates were to be. These choices or wonderful things that happened by God’s wonderful fate was pre-ordained and decided long ago by our Lord and Savior.
Our calling in our personal careers and the steps that are required to secure goals are ordained by God. God puts us where we need to be at every given time of our life. He utilizes us in situations and arranges our path to cross to be of the greater good to our brothers and sisters in Christ. God gives each of us talents and gifts that will not only glorify him but help establish us as a kingdom worker. We do not always make the right decisions, but God allows us to go thru things to make us stronger once we are back on the path intended for our lives. “The heart of a man plans his way,” says Solomon, “but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). We are to plan in the here and now, but we can do so in the confidence that the Lord is acting in our lives and in our circumstances, calling us to His purpose (Crossway, n.d.). The Biblical metanarrative is the overall story of the Bible and it gives us a “roadmap” so to speak on first how to learn more about God with the creation, the fall, the redemption, and the restoration. It also provides direction on what is expected of us as a child of the King to live our lives in glorifying our Lord and Savior. In the scriptures or story of the Bible we are given the metanarrative or rather the grand narrative that gives purpose and meaning to our lives.
God created us each in his image and we are meant to have that relationship with him that promises everlasting life. God gave us the way and the direction that is to be applied to our daily walk, we may fall short of the mark at times, but his grace is sufficient, and he is a forgiving God. Jesus was born and had a very specific purpose in going to the cross, dying, and paying the price for our sins. Our purpose according to God’s word is to live according to his word and spread his gospel to all, especially the lost. I want to know that when I stand before the Lord on that day of Judgement that he will be pleased by my work for the Kingdom and I will hear him say well done my good and faithful servant!
