"We only wanted to do one thing and to do that really well" a statement made by Jan koum, CEO of WhatsApp, is quite synonymous to me. To succeed in life, you must possess at least one special skill better than others know it.
During my first air travel journey, I witnessed how massive an aircraft is compared to what I saw on TV and in the sky.
This made me contemplate as to how can such a humongous object fly in the sky. Furthermore, when I saw a documentary on International Space Station, more questions started boggling me. How did they assemble such a megastructure and that too in space? It was this curiosity and inclination that led me to pursue Mechanical Engineering in the later years.
After attaining distinction in my higher secondary education, I chose to pursue my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Shivajirao S. Jondhale College of Engineering. My undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering was a judicious mix of theory and practicals.
It involved 11 academic projects based on Visual Basic, Thermal, Design, Theory of Machines and Mechatronics. These academic projects strengthened my base for the final year project. My final year was "Improvement in efficiency of an air preheater". As a team that comprised of 4 members, our objective was to demonstrate how the efficient the air preheater becomes with the use of baffles. For this purpose, we used Solidworks and Ansys software tools. I secured maximum possible grades in projects in both 7th as well as in 8th semester.
I have excelled at academics consistently. I secured Gpa of 9.08/10 (3rd rank) in the final semester of engineering in the mechanical department. I also secured the seventh rank in 3rd-4th year of engineering in the same department.
The globalization of the multinationals and my strong desire to understand the business process further propelled me to accept an employment opportunity before pursuing graduate studies. Hence, after completion of my engineering, I was absorbed by Shriya Industries where I am currently working as a Trainee Manufacturing Engineer since June 2016. In this organization, my key responsibilities include preparing product drawings, processing data sheets on AUTOCAD, establishing product, looking after bill of materials, documentation procedure and customer approvals. I also closely monitor the production processes and operating of the plastic injection machines. I also analyse the annual sales data to manage the inventory level in slack and heavy demand period. My work profile includes inventory management where I take care of the reordering and replenishing of raw materials stock. These activities have not only taught me new skills but also enabled me to experience both the technical as well as management aspects of an organization. Apart from my current professional work, I am also pursuing Project Management Professional (PMP) certification which is offered by project management institute and also online courses of 6 sigma and financial accounting offered by IIT.
I had never let my academic pursuits dampen my spirit for participating in extracurricular activities. Throughout my college days, I have had several opportunities to lead, coordinate and participate in many college technical events. I also completed specialized training under Unique Budokan Karate Association in Advanced Karate Basics, Techniques, Katas, Judo and Weapons. Hence, my active participation in various extracurricular activities has rounded up my personality and added to my learning skills.
Industrial Engineering bridges the gap between technical and management department of an organization. My proclivity towards IE had started gaining ground when I had studied Production Planning and Control and Industrial Engineering and Management in the 7th and 8th semesters respectively. I also grabbed the opportunity to explore both aspects of the concept through my professional work experience gained by working at Shriya Industries till date. The best part of IE is that it can be applied to any organization and it aims towards the benefitting the society by reducing cost, human effort and time judiciously. The choice of Master's Program is closely linked to my interest in the field along with emerging industrial scenario in India. The government of India through its policy and regulatory initiatives has embarked upon massive drive to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and make India a "Manufacturing hub" on global landscape. Pickup in FDI is already happening.
I recently came across a paper published by Prof. Gagandeep A Hosmani in International Journal of Research in Management & Business Studies (IJRMBS 2014). It mentions that despite the extensive research carried out in supply chain management (SCM) all over the world, SCM practices have not yet been well adopted in developing countries like India. As I would like to bring these much needed improvements to my country, U.S would be best place to master the above mentioned skills. Hence, the Master's Program in Industrial Engineering will offer me the opportunity to equip myself to discover innovative solutions to challenging problems. On successful completion of the program, I aspire to pursue my career as Consultant and desire to contribute meaningfully to industrial sector. I wish to purse specialization in SCM and would like to professionally associate with top consulting firms in India such as Deloitte.
They say, "To learn the tips and tricks of the trade learn it from the master himself." This is when I learnt about your esteemed university. I anticipate to be a part of the elite family and attaining the appreciable skill sets that will help me stand tall in a crowd. In a university like yours which boasts of a confluence of people from every culture and ideology, I am confident it would facilitate the overall development of my personality. It would be a great pleasure and honour for me if given a chance to pursue my graduate studies at your highly esteemed university.
