It's 5 pm. It's cold. Anita is with her mum, dad, sister, and two brothers. She has her little backpack on, and she's holding her sister's clammy palms, as she walks up an unfamiliar slope above the ocean surface, onto a portable mansion, leaving this grim place, infected with conflict and war.
She does not turn her back once she steps onto the white vessel. She can hear her footsteps as her mangled shoes hit the floor every step of the way, she looked into the ocean and could see a better future, free moving, reflective, and smooth.
Her first step onto the boat is the best feeling she has had in a while.
She felt free of the limitations of a third world. She was also excited as she had never travelled before, but she was frightened of what the world out there will be like. She was not sure if it would be what she imagined it to be. A stress-free world, unlimited potential.
She had marvellous thoughts, and she had been thinking about them for a while now.
When she was walking she was overwhelmed by the sounds hitting her in the head of people walking on the stiff, rusted floors. The new environment wasn't clean but sure was cleaner than her old living situation. She thought back to her most recent home. Floors buried deep under sand dirt and rubbing from the revolting outside environment. She hears the metal clanging once again as she leaves the past behind and only focuses on the present time.
She is walking with her sister, still holding hands as they were both anxious about the journey ahead.
As she walked, she saw crates and boxes also being transported with big cargo nets around them. While she walked gripping the handrails looking down onto the sea surface she sees something in the corner of her eye. For some reason, it stands out to her. It is a small raft, but she is perplexed since she is unsure of its use.
She returns to her parents, asking them what it is, however they disregard her as they are more focused on finding their accommodation since it is getting late. "Are we there yet" her sister exclaims as she yawns, complaining that she is tired and needs sleep. Their parents just tell them to be quiet and to just follow them.
After going down several flights of stairs down to the very bottom which seemed to feel like forever, they finally got to their room 108. They unlocked the door with the weak little key they were given which almost broke when unlocking the door. Their first glance into the room did not thrill them, but it was still better than their old home, so they were just happy to receive some peace and quiet for once.
As she got into her warm, cosy bed as she started imagining what this new world would look like. Towering trees, magnificent mansions, civilised citizens, bulky buildings, the list just went on and on. She kept on thinking and thinking until her thoughts blocked out her parents arguing so that the gentle touch of the ocean could rock her to sleep.
She alarmingly awakened to the sound of lightning strikes she could feel her palpitating pulse pounding her skinny little body. She was trembling. Her mind turned into a jammed interchange not knowing what to do, she was trapped in her own mind. The pitch black walls started closing in on her. She was chained down in a room of thick onyx claustrophobia. She used all of her might to slickly slide out of her now sweaty bed sheets and stand up onto the stone cold floor.
Searching and searching around her cramped minuscule room searching for what feels like hours just to reach her parent's bed still only just hearing the violent screams of the storm. When she reaches her parent's bed, she feels her shoulders go down but feels the frigid liquid huddle around her shivering toes. She yells at her parents to get up but they refuse as they don't hear the sirens and doesn't feel the water. She feels the almost frozen water submerge her ankles, and that is when Anita knows needs she needs to go.
Knowing the current of the water, she moves against it and it leads her right to the door. She shouts at her parents one last time before swiftly opening the door, and seeing the spiral of pain leading upwards to the deck where she could see the water was coming from. She quickly sprints as fast as her scrawny legs can take her. A tear falls from her face thinking about her family. They're gone.
She reaches the deck, panting like a tired dog, she sees a lightning bolt strike the colossal, deadly, yet beautiful ocean, as her drenched clothes and hair hang tight to her frigid body. She can't see anyone else. She can't see anything with the natural showers as well as the tears of her family pouring into her eyes. Anita turns around one last time to feel one final wave blows her off of the boat, leaving her young body to be swallowed by the murderous ocean.
