Categories: Environmental Issues

A thirteen year old girl with concerns and fears for her future has a dream to make a difference, not just for her, but for everyone, strangers, friends and family. She dreams that everyone will be able to experience the sort of life she has. But mostly she dreams for change. Severn Suzuki dreams of a better future and through her voice and words, she expresses her concerns and fears for the world, she voices her hope that she will inspire people to wake up and see just how destructed and damaged the world is.

In 1992, Severn Suzuki did just that and voiced her concerns for the environment in front of the world at the UN Earth Summit 1992. Severn Suzuki expresses her concerns for the environment in her 1992 UN Earth Summit speech. Through her voice and words, Severn was able to accurately convey her deepest fears not just for her future, but for everyone’s. This is seen through the use of anaphora, ‘I am here to speak for’.

By using the repeated phrase, ‘I am here to speak for’ Severn was able to accurately convey just how many people the destruction and poverty affects and who she is trying to help by voicing her concerns. By listing the people she’s supporting, Severn is also being the voice for the people who don’t have a voice or the chance to make a difference.

Through the repeated use of ‘I am here to speak for’ enables Severn to accurately convey just how many people and animals the environmental destruction affects and enables not just the UN but people around the world, to wake up and see just how destructed and damaged the world and its environment is.

Severn Suzuki voices her disgust of the condition the world and its environment in her UN address. She voices her personal investment in the cause and just how determined she is to see a change for the world and all the people in it. This is seen through the use of an emotion quote such as ‘I wish I was rich, if I were I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicines, shelters and love and affection’. Through the use of quoting the disadvantaged boy, Severn was able to express to the UN and the world who the destruction is affecting, but also the selflessness of the disadvantaged. Suzuki also conveys, that this isn’t a small problem, but a large problem that needs fixing or a solution to improve the affect it has as soon as possible. Through the use of quoting the little boy, Severn was able to articulate an emotional sense of reality and shock toward the real affect the environment has on people.
