It is estimated that the average adult makes 35,000 decisions per day. Some may say that fate has control over the outcome of someone's life and others may say that people have the choice to determine one's destiny. The tragedy Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet analysis of this play, and the work “Fate vs. Free Will: Why You Can’t Believe in Both” by Josh Bay will be looked upon during this text. People's destinies are determined only by themselves.
Romeo and Juliet have the choice to leave each other alone.
This quote is from the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare while Juliet was on the balcony. “ ‘It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden’ ” (Shakespeare ll.ii.118). They continue to make these rash decisions while they are in the knowing. These lovers aren’t completely clueless, they know what they are doing and they are choosing to continue to do it. Also the lover, Romeo makes decisions that brought these two lovers together when everything else was pointing in a different direction.
“ ‘Turn back, dull earth, and find thy center out’ ”(Shakespeare ll.i.2). Romeo is saying that he is being pulled toward this woman, that she has that much power over him. But he still questioned if he should go, and on his own, he went to go see her, it was his choice at the end of the day. These lovers make decisions because their hearts was telling them it was the right thing.
They let their very own emotions get the best of them, but they chose what they did and there is no one to blame but themselves.
Without decisions, there would be no need for morals or goals because everything has already been predetermined. This quote is from the essay “Fate vs. Free Will: Why You Can’t Believe in Both”, by Josh Bay on why he believes in free will. “It was my choice to keep up my grades, it was my choice to score well on the SAT, and it was my choice to work hard on the application” (Josh Bay). The writer of this article had a choice. If he did not choose to apply to the school, make sure he kept his grades up, and many more aspects to the outcome of him being accepted into the school, where would he be? In the play Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, the lovers had morals and goals also. “ ‘Will watch thy waking, and that very night ShallRomeoo bear thee hence to Mantua’ ” (Shakespeare.lV.i.116-117). These lovers' goal was to get to Mantua and live their lives together. Without the plan, she might have been married to Paris or worse. Without goals and the decisions made in between the process of getting to the goal, things will not happen for anyone or anything. No one is in control of one's life but themselves.
Some may say that fate has control over one's life. This quote is also from the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare when Romeo is speaking to the Apothecary. “ ‘I pay thy poverty and not thy will’ ” (Shakespeare.V.i.76). Some may say that it is fate because the Apothecary is poor and he did not choose his social class which came to Romeo coming with the money the Apothecary needed which is very coincidental. On the other hand, he chose to go to that specific apothecary, and the apothecary gave him the poison. Also,o he is choosing to go harm himself after hearing news that his lover is dead. ‘ ‘Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss, I die’ ” (Shakespeare V.iii.120). He may be hurt and feel like there is no other way but no one held his mouth open and made him drink the poison, he did it himself because he believed his lover was dead. The choices you make now and the people you choose to surround yourself with all can affect your life.
In conclusion. People determine their destiny because nothing controls one's fate but themselves. Life is based on decisions someone makes and if fate was really in control all of those things someone would have done would have been for nothing. Fate means everything has already been determined. But is the person here not choosing to read this? Life is based on the choices you make. Good or bad, someone makes these choices and it shapes that person into who they will be one day. Accept that and believe it.
