Following her stint at Princeton, she assumed the role of a visiting Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1995 to 1997, further solidifying her reputation as a distinguished mathematician.
Since 1997, Katherine Okikiolu has been an integral part of the Mathematics Department at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
Starting as an Assistant Professor, she swiftly ascended the academic ranks. Her achievements did not go unnoticed, as in 1997, she became the first Black mathematician to receive the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship, a recognition of her exceptional contributions to the field. The same year witnessed her promotion to the position of Associate Professor at UCSD.
In June 1997, Okikiolu's excellence was further highlighted when she secured the Claytor-Woodard lecture at the National Association of Mathematicians (NAM) meeting during the Joint Mathematics Meetings.
