Pressure On Females To Have Perfect Bodies

Women today are faced with pressure and expectations from society. They are constantly worrying about numerous posts and images of overwhelming thin, beautiful females. With the rise of social media, the pressure to dress up, put on heavy contoured make-up, strike a pose, and upload flawless, filtered photos to attract several likes is a potential source of insecurity. Our generation is facing unattainable appearance pressure to be perfect. Many girls and women are under the pressure to have perfect appearances. so one of the major expectations of women and young girls is to have the “perfect” body image. Trying to lose weight for health reasons, to look and feel better is one thing but trying to create a perfect body is quite the other. If you want to have a perfect body, it's important to ask yourself “ Is that where I want to put my energy?” is that what I want to focus on? For example, celebrities go through a lot to look the way they do. If that’s what’s important to you, go for it but realize that there is a cost.

This relates to the thesis because so many people try to have a perfect body just because they saw someone look like that. Talking about how media affect women and their minds about their bodies.

Body image is the mental image a person has of their appearance, especially as it relates comparison to the bodies of others. Looking at different advertisements many women see that “Wow people have that perfect body!” and makes them want the same body type as them. Advertising and commercials can have different impacts on someone's mind and thoughts about their bodies. Feeling like you are not good enough is a big problem in today's society, especially since everyone is on social media most of the time. We see models and how they stay fit by exercising and eating healthy and yet everyone else tends to want to look like that. Being insecure about your own body is a major issue now and has been for many many years that have passed. No matter who we are or where we live, society puts this pressure upon us. We are typically faced with this pressure by models on television and in magazines. Companies seem to have targeted women more so than men. They usually use women with good looks and nice figures to advertise and market their products. When companies use these women in advertisements, it is setting a standard that other women feel that they need to follow. What has happened to internal beauty? Society puts so much importance on external beauty that people have forgotten about an individual having beauty within. The sayings “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “beauty is only skin deep” come to mind when I think about just how much emphasis is placed on outer appearance. Girls are often lowering their self-esteem because celebrities and influencers in the media often have “clear” skin, slim waists, and slim thighs, they also can get plastic surgery, have makeup artists, and use photoshop. The fact that media stars 'can also get plastic surgery, makeup artists, and can use photoshop' shows that the magazine stars aren't as perfect as they seem. I feel these problems have increased drastically due to social media. Social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, etc. are often making girls have lower self-esteem because the “famous” influencers and celebrities are constantly posting “sexy” or “cute” pictures of them. But maybe these pictures are photoshopped or they have gotten plastic surgery or have professional makeup artists do their makeup before taking any pictures or going into public.

Is anyone perfect? Is there anyone in the world that has no flaws? Some people have limbs, some have food allergies, and some just don’t look ideal. “Too skinny”, “too fat”, “too tall”, Too short”. These are things I hear about people daily. But no one is capable of being completely flawless, absolutely perfect. Seven in 10 girls suffer from self-esteem issues, a thinking disorder in which individuals feel that they are not “good enough,” whether in school, in physical appearance, or relationships with friends and family members. Girls who have low self-esteem can sometimes be affected by depression, bulimia, anorexia, or self-harm.'You are beautiful just the way you are' is a phrase that is often difficult for teen girls to believe. This is because the pressure for girls to have a perfect appearance is everywhere they look. Just one magazine, social media post, or advertisement displaying unrealistic body standards can damage a girl's body image, and the constant barrage of these messages leaves a voice in their head telling them they need to look like what they see. Another part of the solution is increasing diversity. If the mainstream media diversified its representation of beauty, girls wouldn't feel so inclined to look a particular way. Women and girls of all shapes, sizes, and colors are beautiful, and therefore should all be represented in the media. Only representing one appearance in the media make girls feel that they aren't beautiful unless they look like what they see plastered over magazines time and time again. Everyone deserves to love themselves and remember that beauty is not ''one-size-fits-all.'

In conclusion, there is too much pressure on girls. Society tells girls how to look and how to act. That's not good at all. Girls shouldn't be afraid to go to school for the fear of being called fat or ugly. Girls should be confident because we all in our way are beautiful. Even if it doesn't feel like it, you are. Every girl just needs to accept that everyone has flaws that they cant change. Even supermodels do. Everyone has their flaws, we just need to learn to accept them.
