In his speech 'Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death, ' Patrick Henry successfully conveys and emphasizes the imperative:) need for the colonists to unite and stand up against Great Britain and its rule of tyranny:) Wow! Nice topic sentence. He achieves this by appealing to rhetoric devices such as parallelism, repetition, and restatement. Henry uses parallelism to evoke emotional and passionate responses from the audience: 'We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne..." (1paragraph 3).
He cleverly creates balance between phrases through strong syntax by having all the verbs in the past tense to capture and hold the audience's attention. It makes complicated sentences easier to understand while simultaneously appealing to pathos and causing feelings of motivation by pointing out that every effort the colonists' have put forth have been neglected and denied. Furthermore, by constantly using the pronoun 'we, '' he creates a sense of unity between himself and the audience, reassuring them that they will work together to solve the problem.:) Henry uses repetition to advance his argument when he claims 'Gentleman may cry, Peace, Peace -- but there is no peace' (paragraph 5).
The reiteration of the word 'peace' is to emphasize its significance; if they don't come together to fight Great Britain, they will never acquire peace or success.
Good Lastly, Henry utilizes the rhetorical device of restatement. He asserts, 'They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary' (paragraph 4). Henry uses this technique to clarify and highlight his key points; he hopes to inspire feelings of rage and passion from the audience and effectively does so.
He relays their adversaries viewpoints on them in another perspective to emphasize and get the colonists thinking. Patrick Henry attempts to and successfully persuades his audience and fellow colonists to fight for their freedom through the use of several rhetorical devices.?emphasize and get the colonists thinking.
