Pharmacy as a career is a compelling and ever-changing field that holds a wide spectrum of opportunities. The possibilities of my future while currently pursuing a Pharm.D are exciting. My motivation and interest in a pharmaceutical career stems from my desire to help improve others’ well-being and health, to be a knowledgeable and trustworthy individual in my community, and to one-day reach my highest potential through a meaningful profession. As I advance into the professional program in the fall, I am looking forward to learning in greater detail the multiple medicines and their interactions in the body.
I hope to acquire new skills that I can utilize in my daily life as well as my career.
As a future healthcare professional, I understand the importance of technological advancements and being educated on the new discoveries being made in the field. The innovations that we will see in 2029 will change the pharmacy work environment and help to advance the profession so that more patients can benefit from medicinal treatment.
To start, one example of change that may occur is that of the growing use of technology.
The use of drones or machines to deliver medications may emerge. As we see the use of automated dispensing cabinets in hospital settings, we can conclude that robotics will become adopted in multiple settings to compound or dispense medication. Many hope that more pharmacists will take over the role of a supplementary prescriber to manage a condition within the parameters of a clinical plan agreed upon with the independent prescriber and the patient.
As the population’s life expectancy continues to rise, this is an ideal scenario for managing long-term conditions especially those within the elderly.
In the next few years, many more pharmacists will have the chance to undertake training needed to prescribe on a daily basis. This will be an exciting development that will have a major impact in pharmacy. As we continue to increase accessibility with screenings and vaccinations, lab tests could also be administered at the pharmacy in the future. For instance, checking blood pressure and taking glucose or cholesterol levels will extend the diagnostic role that a pharmacist is capable of. These additional services allow for the pharmacist to become more available in their counseling and relationship with patients. All healthcare providers take the public’s health seriously and advise against smoking, drinking too much, eating the wrong foods, and not getting enough exercise. An advantage is that pharmacists are easily accessible. Therefore, pharmacists have an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles. In the future, I believe we will see more participation in public health campaigns as a normal activity for pharmacists. This leadership role to promote healthy living and medication adherence extends beyond that in the community. Pharmacists have many responsibilities and a large workload. Some of these duties may include; having to look for errors in the prescription, counsel and give advice to their patients, correctly fill and dispense medications, and manage a team of technicians. There are many skills that a pharmacist should possess. One of the most important however, is being a great leader. In order to be an effective leader one must have good judgement, excellent communication skills, and have a forward looking positive approach. A good pharmacist will take time to learn about each of their team members in order to utilize their skills effectively. By learning how to become a productive leader, one may feel more confident in their work and ready to tackle any challenge that may arise. To conclude, the pharmacy environment in 2029 will be different with new updates while still incorporating the same values. Pharmacist’s will talk more with their patients, providing the best interpersonal care. They will be responsible for managing and possibly prescribing a better medication for their patients, while conducting regular medication reviews with improved technology. One of the core principles of pharmacy deals with leadership, and this is something that pharmacists will be remunerated and recognized for on the job. Pharmacists will be regarded as equal colleagues among other health professionals and they will be key to targeting public health. The pharmacy environment has evolved considerably in the past decade due to role expansion, technological advancements, and patients’ expectations. Although the changes to come are unknown, pharmacy students have a bright future to look forward to. I hope to embrace the change and become a leader with a vision.
